INTRODUCTION
• From Trash to Treasure: Exploring the Chemical
Transformation of Waste into Valuable Products.
• The growing problem of waste disposal has led
to the development of innovative ways to turn
waste into a valuable resource.
• This presentation will explore the chemical
transformation of waste and how it can be used
to produce useful products.
RECYCLE
• Recycling is defined as a process of converting waste and non-useful products into
new and useful products for human use.
• Recycling is an excellent and cost-efficient system of conserving the environment
and saving energy.
NEED FOR RECYCLE
• This helps to reduce the need for landfill and more costly forms of disposal.
• Recycling also reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging),
refining and processing raw materials all of which create substantial air and water
pollution.
TYPES OF WASTE
• Waste can be broadly classified into organic and inorganic
waste.
• Organic waste can be broken down by microorganisms
while inorganic waste cannot.
• The chemical composition of waste determines the type
of waste and the methods used to transform it.
ORGANIC WASTE
• Organic waste can be transformed using chemical processes such as pyrolysis,
gasification, and fermentation.
• Pyrolysis involves heating waste in the absence of oxygen, while gasification
involves heating waste in the presence of a small amount of oxygen.
• Fermentation involves the breakdown of organic waste by microorganisms.
INORGANIC WASTE
• Inorganic waste can be transformed using chemical processes such as smelting,
electrolysis, and precipitation.
• Smelting involves heating waste with a reducing agent, while electrolysis involves
using electricity to break down waste.
• Precipitation involves the separation of waste using chemicals.
