TRADITIONA
L GAMES
Discussants: Mica L. Llaneta &
Aubrey Rose Prado
Traditional Games
• Traditional games are those games within a
society that people have played for many years,
because participation gives them a chance to
practice something that has meaning within their
society (Bressan, & Van Der Merwe, 1992).

• As a form of play, traditional games includes

participants, some sort of challenge or goal and rules
although they are not as formal or organized as sports.
HISTORY
Patintero, also known as harangang-taga or
tubigan, is a traditional Filipino children’s game.
PATINTERO
Furthermore, it is derived from Spanish word tinte
which means “tint” or “ink” in reference to the
drawn lines. Another name for it is tubigan,
tubiganay, or tubig-tubig (“water [game]”),
because the grid lines are also commonly drawn by
wetting the ground with water. It is also known as
harangang-taga or harang-taga which means
“block and catch”, referring to the game
mechanics. It is also the most widely played native
game in the Philippines. Because the game doesn’t
need any equipment to play it, but for an official
game, prepare chalk to mark lines on the ground
and perhaps a whistle and a stopwatch to set a time
limit.
• Patintero is one of the most popular outdoor games. It’s a
native game in the Philippines that requires two teams with at
least five players on each side. The objective of the game is
to block (harang) the players from the opposing team from
passing. The game is fun and helps develop gross motor
skills and team building. It is the best practice for hand-eye
coordination and strategic thinking and tests a player’s
agility, sense of balance and spatial awareness. It’s not an
“exclusive” chlidren’s game at all. Adults play patintero too
as a recreational activity during family or friends gathering.
How to play patintero:
1. Draw a massive rectangle on the ground using chalk for clarity and divide it into smaller
rectangles depending on the number of players. It involves 6-8 smaller rectangles
2. The players should form two teams with an equal number of players (2-6 players each
team or morej, where one team plays defensive and guards the other team against passing
the lines. The two teams make up the guards and the runners (passers)
3. The guards assign a player to the lateral line in the middle of the rectangle and the other
players. On each horizontal line.
4. The objective of the runners is to get across to one end of the big rectangle and back
without being touched or tagged by a guar.
5. During the game, the guards should ensure they have both feet on the ground before
tagging their opponent, otherwise, it will not count
6. Once a runner is tagged, he or she gets out of the game. If a runner makes it across the
big rectangle and back without being touched with the butterfly fingers, they earn a point.
7. Once all the runners of a team have been tagged, it’s game over.
Rules of the game:
1. The game starts with a rock-paper-scissors (locally called jak-en-poy) or by a
coin toss. Whoever wins becomes the first passers
2. There is a time limit of two minutes for each team to score.
3. Once the two minutes elapse, the two teams change sides, and the guards become
the passers and vice-versa.
4. The passers position themselves at the starting point (base). This point is just
behind the first crosswise line of the rectangle. While the guards stand on the lines
5. Guards can only move along their respective lines, except for the team leader.
The team leader positions himself or herself on the first line. He or she moves both
along the crosswise and lengthwise lines
6. The guards prevent any passer from crossing the lines and not allowed to step
into the squares.
7. The guards tag the passers that come within their reach, including those who run
past them. But they must do it only when their feet are on the lines. Tagging a passer
when none or only one foot on the line is not valid
8. Passers should cross all the lines as quickly as possible. No passer should stay inside the
square for more than 3 minutes (or depending on a set time the teams have earlier agreed).

9. Once a passer successfully crosses all the lines and returns to the base without being
tagged, hisor her team earns points.

10. If a passer is tagged, he or she is “eliminated and stays back behind the starting point.
The eliminated player either waits for his or her next turn to pass or wait until all members
of the passers team are eliminated

11. Once all the passers are “eliminated”, their team becomes the Guards. And the game
continues with the two teams exchanging roles.
TUMBANG
PRESO
Tumbang preso ("knock down the
prisoner"), also known as tumba
lata ("knock down the can") or bato
lata ("hit the can [with a stone]"), is a
Filipino traditional children's game.
The game involves throwing a slipper
at a can or bottle, which one player -
the tayà - attempts to guard. The game
is usually played in backyards, parks,
or in streets when there is little traffic
in an area.
History of Tumbang Preso
• Tumbang Preso is also known as Tumba lata, or otherwise Bato lata.

• • Tumbang Preso is a unique traditional game in the Philippines that is favorite
among Filipino children. The name of this sport is derived from the Filipino
words Tumba, which means ‘to fall’ and preso, which means ‘prisoner’.
Translating to ‘fallen prisoner’. The game is played on backyards, streets, and
open areas. It borrows elements from Tag and Dodge-ball to inculcate in those
who play it strategic thinking and agility..

• Even though Tumbang Preso is a native Filipino game. There is no known date as
to when it came to be. Neither is the creator of the game known. The children who
found it fun would gather with whichever materials they had and start playing the
sport. Its popularity has been passed from generation to generation, and until today
it still commands significant attention from children and some adults across the
globe.
How to play this game:
1. The guard of the can is chosen by a game by throwing the slipper on the line, who
the farthest is the It.
2.The hitters should be ready to hit the can using a stone or a slipper but they will
never cross the toe-line.
3.The slippers could retrieve if they could knock down the can. The It should be fast
so to put the can inside the circle and tag one of the hitter.
4. The hitter that’s been tag is the new It.
5.When the can is outside the circle the hitters could knock down or kicked the can.
6.if the hitters is not able to retrieve his slipper, the It will get it and place it under
the can inside the circle now he or she is the new guard.
7. if the hitters is not able to retrieve his sleeper, another hitter could help him/her to
be saved.
8. Enjoy the game
Agawan Base
Agawan Base is an example of ‘laro ng
lahi’ under the invasion game. The
objective of the game is to imprison other
players and steal the base of the opponent.
Popular raises in the past 2-3 decades.
Originated in the Philippines with no
documented inventor. It is sometimes called
stealing or capturing base. This game
depicts territorial rivalry and religion
conflict.
Other terms of Agawan Base:
-Sikyu – Hiligaynon.
-Puon-puon – Cebuano
-Eskati/Tigso/Tayukok – Bisaya
How to play this game?
There will be 2 bases. Each base has equal members.
Mark your base with the base markers
Assign a member to guard your base. Other members may run outside
their base to capture the opponents or to steal the opponent’s base.
To capture the opponents, you must tag them.
The captured opponent will be the other team’s prisoner. He or she must
stand in the captor’s base until his or her teammates tagged him or her
to be saved.
• To steal the base of the opponent and win, you must touch their base
Chinese Garter
Chinese garter is called “Chinese Jump Rope” in
other countries. It originated from China in the 7 th
century. They play it before during the celebration of
Chinese new year. It was passed from generation to
generation and has become popular even in other
countries.
Mechanics :
First, there must be 2 teams to play this game. There
should be two people serve as the “game post”
holding both ends of the garter which is stretched
horizontally while others are trying to transfer
across the other side of the garter. The main goal of
this game is to across over the garter without being
tripped.
Each team has two position in the game mother as the
leader and the rest are the baby. If the baby fails to jump
at a certain level, the Mother can still save her team. But
if the mother failed, the other team’s turn. In each round,
the height of the garter increases that demand agility of
The Chinese Garter game is usually subdivided into ten levels. Most of the time,
however, the players may decide for their desired number of levels for their game.
Here is an example of the levels being used to give you an idea of the game:

Level 1 – The garter is being held by the posts closer to the ground.
Level 2 – Knee high
Level 3 – Around the height of their hips
Level 4 – Waist high
Level 5 – Chest high
Level 6 – Shoulder high
Level 7 – Head high
Level 8 – At the tip of the head
Level 9 – A few inches above the head
Level 10 – Also known as the Father / Mother Jump, as high as a kid raising his arms
high on tip toes.
Piko
This traditional game of “Piko” or “Hopscotch” is
among the popular street games during my early age in
80’s
This traditional game is not only popular in the
Philippines before but also in many parts of the world
but the rules and mechanics varies on location. The
earliest record was in 1677 in Poor Robins Almanack
with the name “Scotch-hoppers”.
“Stapu or “Kith- kith” – India
“Rayuela” – Spain
“Golosa” – Latin America
“Knaccuku” – Russia

This game can be played in different forms, shape and

mechanics. All you need is a marker to draw lines in
the ground and cue ball or “pamato”. It also has variety
such as Sud-sud Krus and Piko’t Bata.
How to play this game?
1. Throw the stone on the marked area. Try to aim for number five. The player whose stone is nearest to the
number five is the first to play and the stone furthest is the last one.
2. The first player will throw the stone at the first box. Then, he will jump across the area without stepping
in the first box.
3. Before he returns, he should pick up his stone, still, without jumping on the first box.
4. It’s the next player’s turn. He will only do what the first player did.
5. After all players get to turn. The first player will now throw his stone on the second box and repeat the
procedure, now not stepping on the second box.
6. If a player steps on a line, they stop and let the next player try. They have to wait until their next turn to
try again.
7. If any player have finished all the boxes, the game will level up by preparing to take over a box. The
player have to put their pamato on top of their two fingers without falling
8. When the player reached the middle, they have to toss their pamato up and catch it. If they catch it, they
have to throw it outside and jump on it.
9. The player will now throw their pamato without looking. If their pamato lands in one of the boxes, it will
be marked as their box (bahay).
