History of Bluetooth
 Bluetooth technology was developed in the late 1990s by
Ericsson, a telecommunications company based in
Sweden.

 The initial goal was to create a wireless communication

standard for short-range connections between devices.

 Bluetooth 1.0, released in 1999, was the first official

version of the technology. It offered basic connectivity for
devices such as mobile phones, headsets, and
computers, with a range of about 10 meters.

 Subsequent versions (Bluetooth 1.1, 1.2, 2.0, 2.1)

introduced improvements in data rates, security features,
and compatibility.

 Bluetooth 3.0 (2009) brought Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)

for faster data transfer speeds.

 In 2010, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) was introduced as

part of Bluetooth 4.0.
Bluetooth Basics

 Bluetooth is a wireless technology used to transfer data

between different electronic devices. The distance of
data transmission is small in comparison to other modes
of wireless communication.
 Bluetooth technology is a protocol for establishing a local
network to exchange data wirelessly between nearby
devices
 This technology eradicates the use of cords, cables,
adapters and permits the electronic devices to
communicate wirelessly among each other.
 Bluetooth is an open standard, meaning anyone can
freely use the technology without a license. This is one of
the main reasons why Bluetooth is so popular and is built
into more and more devices every day.
Working Of Bluetooth

Device Initialization:
Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as smartphones, headphones, or speakers,
come equipped with Bluetooth technology for wireless communication.
Discovery of Nearby Devices:
Devices scan for nearby Bluetooth devices in their vicinity. This process involves
detecting Bluetooth signals and device identifiers (Bluetooth MAC addresses).
Pairing:
When a user wants to connect two Bluetooth devices, they initiate the pairing
process. Pairing involves exchanging unique identifiers and encryption keys
between the devices to establish a secure connection.
Authentication:
During pairing, devices authenticate each other's credentials to ensure authorized
communication. Pairing methods like Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) or Numeric
Comparison verify the authenticity of the devices.
Frequency Hopping:
Bluetooth uses frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) to
avoid interference and enhance security. It rapidly switches
between different radio frequencies during data transmission.
Range and Connectivity:
Bluetooth typically has a range of about 10 meters to 100
meters, depending on the device's power class. It provides
short-range wireless connectivity for various applications.
Profiles:
Bluetooth profiles define specific functionalities and services
supported by Bluetooth devices. Examples include A2DP for
audio streaming, HFP for hands-free calling, and OPP for file
transfer.
Advantages of
Bluetooth
 Eliminates wires
 Facilitates Data and Voice Communication
 Offers formation of Ad hoc networks
 Standardized protocol
 Free of charge
 Easy to use
 Low power consumes battery less
 Stationary and mobile environments
 Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology
Disadvantages of Bluetooth

Data sent between two Bluetooth devices is very

slow compared with Wi-Fi transfer Rate.

Range Of a Bluetooth Device is 15-30 feet

depending upon the Device.

Security is Biggest Disadvantage as transfer

takes place through radio waves and a hacker
can easily hack it.

Constant evolution of Bluetooth technology has

started causing compatibility issues with older
versions.
Applications
 Automatic Check-in

Hotels are testing, or plan to test, services that allow

guests to check in, unlock room doors and even control
room temperature with handheld devices equipped with
Bluetooth Technology.

 Smart Home

Homes equipped with Bluetooth devices may be able

to recognize the arrival of its residents and unlock the
door on their arrival. The device will also adjust heat to
preset temperature.

 Hands-Free Calling:

Bluetooth-enabled car systems and hands-free devices

allow drivers to make and receive calls safely while
keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the
road.
Future Of Bluetooth
 Bluetooth technology continues to evolve, with ongoing
advancements shaping its future trajectory.

 Integration with 5G networks is a key aspect of Bluetooth's

future.

 Combined, Bluetooth and 5G offer synergistic capabilities

for diverse applications, spanning from IoT connectivity to
high-speed data transfer and low-latency communication.

 Future Bluetooth versions are expected to prioritize high-

fidelity audio, immersive soundscapes, and seamless
connectivity with audio devices.

 Optimizations in power consumption, sleep modes, and

data transmission efficiency support prolonged device
operation and enhanced user convenience.

 New versions of Bluetooth technology will meet the high-

speed and large range.
Recap of Key Points:
Bluetooth technology offers seamless wireless
connectivity, versatility, and compatibility across a wide
range of devices and applications.
