Company style/company kalam


18th – 19th century
• Indo-European style of painting
• A style that developed because of European influence of Indian artist.
• More of a documentation hence had realistic approach.
• Britishers wanted to capture the something picturesque and exotic,
other than documenting the Indian life.
• Amalgam of naturalistic and stylization of medieval Indian miniatures.
• First started in madras presidency of South India then was seen in rest
of the country.
• Now the emphasis was on capturing ‘objective reality’.
• Material was mostly paper but ivory too.
• Dwindling patronage

• Started a lithographic printing press
in Ghatkopar, Mumbai in 1894
• In 1904, Viceroy Lord Curzon, on behalf of the
British King Emperor, bestowed upon Varma
the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal.

• Born in Budapest
• In 1929, she joined the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
• Young Girls, selected for the Grand Salon, Paris in
1933, and becnomes the youngest ever and the only
Indian to receive this recognition.
• Psuedorealism – devajyoti ray
• In 1934 family returns to India

• Influential movement in early 20th century based on swadeshi ideas.
• Originated in Kolkata and Shantiniketan which flourished all over
India and was led by Abhindranath Tagore.
• Reacted against the academic art.
• Looked at ancient murals and medieval Indian miniatures for
inspiration.
• Wanted to develop Indian yet modern style in response to
‘swadeshi’ fervour which would connect to the then contemporary
sensibilities of indians.

Progressive artist Group
1947–56

• Also known as Bombay progressive group was formed by six rebellion artists
from 1947–56

• Francis Newton Souza, SH Raza, Sadanand Krishnaji Bakre, Krishnaji Howlaji Ara,
Hari Ambadas Gade and M. F. Husain.

Rejected revivalist approach of Bengal school and also turned away from the
academic art of art schools set up by British.

• In 1950, Vasudeo S. Gaitonde, Krishen Khanna and Mohan Samant joined the
Group. Following the departure of the two main founders Souza and Raza from
India few years later, S.K. Bakre also left the group, which ultimately disbanded
in 1956.
