DEPRESSION
• Depressive disorder (also known as depression) is a common
mental disorder. It involves a depressed mood or loss of
pleasure or interest in activities for long periods of time.

• Is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness


and loss of interest and can interfere with your daily routine.
OVERVIEW:

• Depression is different from regular mood changes and feelings about everyday
life. It can affect all aspects in life, including relationships with family, friends
and community. It can result from or lead to problems at school and at work.
• Depression can happen to anyone. People who have lived through abuse, severe
losses or other stressful events are more likely to develop depression. WOMEN
are more likely to have depression than men.
• Globally an estimated 5% of adults suffer from depression.
• Can lead to suicide.
• There is effective treatment for mild, moderate and severe depression.
FACTORS AFFECTING DEPRESSION

• Life events such as unemployment, bereavement, and traumatic events;


• Physical health – physical inactivity or harmful use of alcohol that will result to diseases;
• Genetics
• Brain chemistry imbalance
• Poor nutrition
• Drugs
• Stress
• Bullying
• Family issues
• Financial Problem
TYPES AND CLASSIFICATION OF
DEPRESSION
• Major Depression – also known as clinical depression, depression, unipolar depression. It is
when you feel sad, down or miserable most of the time. You might also lose interest in things
you usually enjoy.
• Types of Major depression include melancholia, psychotic and antenatal or postnatal. You may
be diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe depression
• Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – it is officially known as a major depressive disorder with
seasonal pattern. It is believed to be caused by a disturbance in the normal circadian rhythm of
the body. People who reside in colder climates where there are short, dark days may be at the
highest risk.
TYPES AND CLASSIFICATION OF
DEPRESSION
• Persistent Depressive Disorder – also known as dysthymia, persistent depressive disorder
causes symptoms that last for at least 2 years. A person living with this disorder may have
episodes of major depression as well as milder symptoms that do not meet the criteria for
major depressive disorder
• Post partum Depression – after giving birth, some people experience a brief period of sadness
or heightened emotions that some people call the “baby blues”. This usually goes away in a
few days to a few weeks. Post partum depression or post natal depression is more severe.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

• Feeling sad, irritable, empty


• Loss of pleasure or interest in activities
• Irregular mood fluctuations
• Poor concentration
• Feeling of excessive guilt or low self worth
• Hopelessness about the future
• Thoughts about dying or suicide\
• Disrupted sleep
• Changes in appetite or weight
• Feeling very tired or weak or low in energy
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

• Sleeping too much or too little


• Agitation, restlessness, and pacing up and down
• Slowed movement and speech
• Difficulty thinking, Concentrating or making decisions
• Insomnia
• Avoiding social situations and activities that they used to enjoy
• Working without a break
• Displaying abusive pr controlling behavior in relationships
• Crying, vocal outbursts, clinginess
• Defiant behavior
TRIGGERS OF DEPRESSION

• Stressful light events such as loss, family conflicts, and changes in relationships
• Incomplete recovery after having stopped depression treatment too soon
• Medical conditions, especially a medical crisis such as a new diagnosis or a chronic illness
such as heart diseases or diabetes
