SAFE CARRIAGE OF BULK CARGO
• Bulk by definition means large quantities
• Bulk in cargo terms means unpackaged cargo
• For cargoes carried in bulk both are true
• There are safety issues with bulk cargoes
• Structural strength, cargo shift & stability
• BLU Code is in IMSBC Code Supplement
• IMSBC Code is for safe carriage & BLU Code is for safe
Loading/ unloading of bulk cargoes
• Together they ensure safe cargo operation

4
IMSBC CODE- GENERAL
• It was first published in 2008
• It superseded the BC Code in 2011
• Its current edition is 2018
• The aim of the Code is to facilitate safe
stowage and shipment of bulk cargoes
• There are 3 bulk cargo Groups
• A: Cargoes which may liquefy if carried
with > TML
• B: Cargoes which possess chemical hazard
• C: Cargoes which are not in either Group A
or B 5
IMSBC SECTIONS
• 1: General Provisions
• 2: General loading, carriage & unloading precautions
• 3: Safety of personnel & ship
• 4: Assessment of Acceptability of consignments for safe shipment
• 5: Trimming procedures
• 6: Methods of determining Angle of Repose
• 7: Cargoes that may liquefy (Group A)
• 8: Test procedures for cargoes that may liquefy
• 9. Materials possessing chemical hazards (Group B)
• 10: Carriage of solid wastes in bulk
• 11: Security provisions
• 12. Stowage factor conversion tables
• 13: References to related information and recommendations
6
IMSBC CODE APPENDIX

• 1: Individual schedules of solid bulk cargoes

• 2: Laboratory test procedures, associated apparatus and

standards

• 3: Properties of solid bulk cargoes

• 4: Index

• 5. Bulk Cargo Shipping Names in 3 languages (E, F & S) 7

CARGO OP. 1: PRIOR TO LOADING
• Maximum Ballast on board at arrival
• Bunkers and stores for voyage + reserve
• Quantity of cargo which can be loaded
• Total quantity of BW to be de-ballasted
• Cargo loading and de-ballasting to commence
simultaneously
• Cargo loading rate and BW de-ballast rate to be
reconciled
• De-ballast before loading completion
• Final trimming pour
• Draught Checks & Surveys
8
CARGO OP. 2: LOADING
SEQUENCE
• Arrival Condition: Full Ballast, Empty Holds, NOR
• Hold inspection, NOR acceptance, Cargo briefing
• Check list, load plan & draft survey
• Open hatch, load cargo & discharge ballast
• Continued draft checks throughout loading
• Complete minimum number of pours
• Complete de-ballasting operations &
• Use trimming pour to get desired trim
• Complete and submit BLU Plan
• Draft survey, Final Inspection & Close hatches
• Sign BL, submit PC & Departure 9
CARGO OP. 3: CARE DURING
VOYAGE
• Shipper instr. Contractual obligation
• Ventilation
• Hatch cover venting
• Cargo & Ship sweat
• Water Ingress monitoring
• Heat damage monitoring
• Gas monitoring
• Record-keeping 1

CARGO OP. 4: DISCHARGING CARGO
• Discharging according to BLU plan
• Vigilant and Alert
• Careful monitoring of discharge operations
• May take longer than loading operation
• Damage report (See MGN 107)
• Claims if Q&Q is compromised
• Claims result in loss of revenue
• Successful Operation- No Claims 1
