AREQUIPA
“The White City”
Arequipa, known as "The White City", is a city located in southern Peru. It is famous for its
impressive colonial architecture, built mainly with ashlar, a white volcanic stone. The city is
surrounded by three imposing volcanoes, Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu, which are part of its
characteristic landscape. Arequipa is recognized for its rich history, its delicious gastronomy
and its vibrant culture, which includes traditional festivals and a wide range of tourist
activities.
LOCATION
Arequipa is surrounded by imposing volcanoes and mountainous
landscapes. Its historic center, declared a World Cultural Heritage
Site by UNESCO, is full of magnificent colonial buildings, many of
which are made of ashlar, a white volcanic stone.
GASTRONOMY
The gastronomy of Arequipa is a fusion of the best of the Andean
cultures that settled in the region and the Spanish influence.
MISTI VOLCANO
The Misti volcano is one of the most emblematic mountains of the city of Arequipa,
in southern Peru. With an altitude of approximately 5,822 meters above sea level.
VIRGEN DE CHAPI
It is a religious festival in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria de
Chapi. Thousands of faithful gather at the Chapi Sanctuary to
participate in processions, masses and prayers, demonstrating
their devotion and faith.
CARNIVALS
The Arequipa Carnivals are a colorful and joyful celebration that takes place in
the city of Arequipa, in southern Peru. This festival takes place during the
month of February and is characterized by parades, music, dances, water and
foam games, as well as the use of costumes and masks.
LOCATION
- The city is located in the Quechua altitudinal region,
at an altitude of 2328 m above sea level. n. m. The
lowest sector of the city, known as Huayco in the
Uchumayo district, is located at 2041 m above sea
level. n. m., while the highest point reaches 2810 m. n.

- The Chili River meanders through the


center of the city from north to southwest,
sculpting the Arequipa Valley, also referred
to as the Chili Valley.
GASTRONOMY
Arequipa cuisine is “tremendously unique,” ​
with its own formats and techniques, a variety
of endemic dishes, and products and uses that
other cuisines do not have. “It is the land of
shrimp, of guiñapo chicha, of the herbs of its
own countryside.”
This leads to the creation of exquisite
dishes such as rocoto relleno, chupe
de camarones, cuy chactao, picantes
and a wide variety of dark and light
broths.
MISTI VOLCANO
El Misti is an active stratovolcano that rises majestically above the surrounding
landscape. Its perfectly symmetrical cone and imposing presence make it a
natural icon of the region. Despite its past volcanic activity, Misti is currently
considered dormant, making it a popular destination for hiking and adventure
tourism. Many visitors venture to climb its slopes to enjoy stunning views of
Arequipa and the surrounding Andean landscapes.
VIRGEN DE CHAPI
- The festival of the Virgin of Chapi is considered one of the most important
and popular in the Arequipa region, and represents an opportunity to
renew faith, express gratitude and ask the Virgin for protection.

- It usually lasts several days, generally


around May 1 to 15. During this time, a
series of religious activities are carried
out in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria
de Chapi, including processions, masses,
prayers, songs and acts of veneration.
CARNIVALS
- During the Carnivals, the streets of Arequipa are
filled with life and joy, with troupes and folk groups
that walk the main avenues of the city, showing the
cultural and traditional wealth of the region.
Attendees usually actively participate in the
festivities, dancing to the rhythm of music and
enjoying local cuisine.

- The Arequipa Carnivals are an occasion to celebrate


cultural diversity and Peruvian identity, as well as to
bring together families and friends in a festive and
camaraderie atmosphere. It is a unique experience
that combines tradition, folklore and fun, and attracts
visitors from all over the country and abroad.

• The biodiversity in the department of
Cusco is notable, with a rich variety of
flora and fauna in diverse ecosystems.
Tourist destinations such as Lake
Huacarpay offer opportunities to
observe local fauna. The region is also
known for its historical and cultural
importance, with sites like Machu

SAQSAYWAMAN

• Sacsayhuamán or Sacsahuamán is a
ceremonial temple used by the Incas,
located two kilometers north of the
city of Cuzco. It began to be built
during the government of the Sapa
Inca Pachacutec, in the 15th century;
However, it was Huayna Cápac who
completed it in the 16th century.

famous for its sophisticated dry stone walls
that combine huge blocks without the use of
a mortar, fascinating buildings that relate to
astronomical alignments, and its panoramic
views. Its exact use remains a mystery.

THE CITY OF ANCASH
Ancash is a region located in the north-central part of Peru. It was founded on

TYPICAL DISHES
In Ancash, people enjoy a variety of traditional dishes such as "ceviche de
chochos" (a type of ceviche made with lupin beans), "pachamanca" (a dish
cooked with meat, potatoes, and other ingredients underground), and "cuy con
tamales" (guinea pig with tamales).
TYPICAL DANCE
Traditional dances play an important role in Ancash's cultural heritage. One of
the most famous dances is the "Huayno," a lively dance performed to the
rhythm of Andean music.
TOURIST PLACES
The Cordillera Blanca, home to some of the highest peaks in Peru, offers
spectacular opportunities for trekking and mountaineering. The ancient ruins of
Chavín de Huántar showcase the impressive architecture of the Chavín culture.
Additionally, the beautiful Llanganuco Lakes are a must-visit destination for
nature lovers.
