DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

BACHELOR DEGREE IN CIVIL AND IRRIGATION ENGINEERING

TITLE: DESIGN OF LINED CANAL AT UTENGULE USONGWE

IRRIGATION SCHEME. ,
CASE STUDY: UTENGULE USONGWE-MBEYA.
SUPERVISOR: Eng JOSEPH .E. MAGIGE

PRESENTER: BAKARI NYAMBWILO

ADMISSION NO: 20020413014
INTRODUCTION.

Irrigation is the science of artificial application of water to the land

in accordance with the crop requirement throughout the crop period for

full fledged nourishment of the crops. The objectives of irrigation is to

supply the essential moisture for plant growth, enabling transport of

nutrients within the plant body for the case of arid areas.
Utengule village is one of the villages found at Utengule-Usongwe

ward, Mbeya rural District in Mbeya region which is located in North-

West direction from Mbalizi Centre. The farms available at Utengule

village are about 620hectares which depend on Utengule-Usongwe

irrigation scheme for irrigation process.

PROBLEM STATEMENT.

The available main, secondary and tertiary canals of Utengule-Usongwe

irrigation scheme are unlined. This unlined situation allows losses of

water by seepage process which reduces the discharge along the canals

required for crops irrigation hence less production not only that but also

allows the weed and plant growth along the canals

Main objectives.
The main objective to design the lined irrigation canals i.e. main,
secondary and tertiary canals

Specific objectives
 To Conduct Topographical Survey
 To Determine Soil Properties through Sieve Analysis and Atterberg
Limit Test
To Determine irrigation water need for tomatoes and maize
 To design lined irrigation canal
Methodology.

i. Topographical survey

ii. Laboratory test

iii. Using software

iv. Consultation
