THE DIGITAL SELF

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, student would be
able to:
1.Identify facets of digital self.
2.Explain the objects and factors that relate to
the development of the digital self.
3.Create self-portrait to symbolize awareness
in determining digital self.
What is “digital
self”?
It is a new type of
existence. Our being-in-the-
world is not experienced
from within, but from
without. This new being –
our digital self – is
sustained by the eyes that
view it on the internet.
IN THE LAST 20 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN
INTRODUCED TO:
• World Wide Web
• Emailing
• Chat rooms
• On-line shopping
• Cell phones
• Internet gambling
• Internet pornography
• My Space
• Facebook
• Texting
• Sexting
• Tweeting
• I-pods
• Google...Yahoo
• E-Harmony...Match.com
• Four Square
• Wii
DESCARTES’ COGITO ERGO SUM

(I AM SEEN THEREFORE I AM).
AND BERKELEY’S ESSE EST PERCIPI
(TO BE IS TO BE PERCEIVED)

HAS NOW BECOME

ESSE EST IN INTERNET EST
(TO BE IS TO EXIST ON THE INTERNET)!
But how is this digital self actually
constructed?

What are the building blocks we use,

and what are the guiding forces behind
our curating?
who
we
believ
e we
are
now
who we want to be in the
future, how we think
how we want them to view us others see us now
The digital self, with its many curated personas, its
new language and vocabulary, its simulations of
human activities in digital space that are slowly
replacing real actions, is now steadily and stealthily
overwhelming our physical self and taking control of
our lives.

Our only defense is to observe, study, and understand

it, so that we can try to contain it and force it to
remain where it is supposed to live.
Assignment:

Create a self portrait made up of objects or symbols and./or

imagery that represent key elements of your digital identity.

Write an analysis that explains the portrait.

Create a display/or exhibit of the self-portraits.
