MATH RIDDLES

I am something in your house

In the living room I am seen
When you sit on the sofa
You can watch things on my
widescreen.
TELEVISION
I’m often a rectangle
But I’m not a soccer goal
I often have a handle
And sometimes have a keyhole

DOOR
I am a type of common shape
The number of sides I have is four
I’m not a square or a diamond
Instead, I am the shape of a door

RECTANGLE
Recall…
1. What are the five (5)
properties of a parallelogram?
2. What are the properties of
rectangles?
Theorems on
Parallelogram
Theorems
on
Rectangle
Objectives:
a. Define rectangle;
b. Prove theorems on rectangle;
c. Apply the theorems on rectangles
in solving problems.
Properties of Rectangle:
• Has four sides, four vertices, and four
right angles.

• Opposite sides are parallel and

congruent.
THEOREMS ON RECTANGLE

Theorem 1: If a parallelogram has one right

angle, then it has four right angles and the
parallelogram is a rectangle.

Theorem 2: The diagonals of a rectangle are

congruent.
Theorem 1: If a parallelogram has one right angle,
then it has four right angles and the parallelogram
is a rectangle.
Given: ROSE is a parallelogram with is a
right angle.
Prove: are right angles

𝑚 ∠ 𝐸 =90 ° Parallelogram Property 2 and/or 3

Theorem 2: The diagonals of a rectangle
are congruent.

∠ 𝑅𝐸𝑆 ≅ ∠ 𝑂𝑆𝐸 All right angles are congruent
𝐸𝑆 ≅ 𝑆 𝐸 Reflexive Property

𝑅𝑆 ≅ 𝑂𝐸 Corresponding Parts of Congruent
Triangles are Congruent (CPCTC)

Reflexive Property states that a
one triangle are congruent to two sides and the included angle of
number is always equal to itself
another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.
Example 1.
Given rectangle ABCD, with AC = 2x + 31 and
BD = 3(4x – 3)
A B
a. What is the value of x?
b. What is the measures
of AC and BD? D C
Solutions:
A B

b. Find the measure of AC and BD.

D C AC = 2x + 31 BD = 3(4x – 3)
a. Solve for x = 2(4) + 31 = 3[4(4) – 3]
AC = BD = 8 + 31 = 3(16-3)
2x + 31 = 3(4x – 3) = 39 = 3(13)
2x + 31 = 12x – 9 = 39
2x – 12x = -9 – 31
-10x = -40
x=4
Example 2.
If AE + CE = 56, what is the measurement of
DE?
A B

D C
Solution:
AC = BD DE = ½ BD
AC = 56 DE = ½ (56)
DE = 28
Pythagorean Theorem:

square of the length of the
hypothenuse is equal to the sum of
the squares of the length of the two

𝟐 𝟐 𝟐
𝒄 = 𝒂 +𝒃
Where:

a and b are the legs
