NATURE OF WRITING

At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:

a.define writing;
b.value the importance of writing in their
daily lives by sharing their experiences
orally; and
c.write a personal concept of writing
through a reflection paper.

Writing
• According to Nunan (2003), writing is the
mental work of inventing ideas, thinking
about how to express them, and
organizing them into statements and
paragraphs that will be clear to a reader.

• Writing is a thinking process. (Brown,
2001)
• It is the process of using symbols to
communicate thoughts and ideas in a
readable form. (EnglishClub Journal)

Importance of Writing
• Writing expresses who you are as a person.
• Writing fosters your ability to explain a
complex position to readers and to
yourself.
• Writing enhances your critical thinking
skills.

writing, its importance, and its purposes through a
reflection paper.

The reflection paper should contain the following


elements:

1. What are the key concepts that were shared during the
class?
2. What is your personal definition of writing?
3. What did you realize after the class?
4. Why is it important to know the different purposes and

• It is a reading material that provides
information which includes concepts and
theories that are related to the specific
discipline (Scribbr, n.d.).

1. STRUCTURE
• The basic structure that is used by an
academic text is consist of three (3) parts
introduction, body, and conclusion which is
formal and logical.
2. TONE
• Refers to the attitude
conveyed in a piece of
writing.
3. LANGUAGE
• It is important to use
unambiguous language
4. CITATION
• Citing sources in the body of the paper and
providing a list of references as either
footnotes or endnotes is a very important
aspect of an academic text.
5. COMPLEXITY
• An academic text addresses complex
issues that require higher-order thinking
skills to comprehend.
6. EVIDENCE-DRIVEN ARGUMENTS
• What is valued in an academic text is that
opinions are based on a sound understanding of
the pertinent body of knowledge and academic
debates that exist within, and often external to a
specific discipline.
7. THESIS-DRIVEN
• The starting point of an academic text is a particular
perspective, idea or position
• applied to the chosen research problem, such as
establishing, proving, or disproving
• solutions to the questions posed for the topic.

• Vocabulary used by the written language is
more varied rather than the one used in
daily conversations.
2. FORMAL
• Written language should avoid
colloquial words and expressions.
3. CONCISE
• Writing with conciseness involves
choosing language that communicates
the intended meaning unambiguously.
4. OBJECTIVE
• Arguments must use impartial
language, which is not personal,
judgmental, or emotive.
5. ACCURATE
• Text shall exhibit careful use of paragraph
and sentence structure and word choice to
describe and analyze your topics
effectively.
