Molds have a structure that consists mainly of hyphae, which are long, thread-like cells. These hyphae intertwine to form a
network called mycelium, which is the main body of the mold. The hyphae are made up of multiple cells and have a cell wall,
usually composed of chitin, which provides structural support.Molds reproduce by releasing spores, which are single-celled
reproductive units.Molds feed on dead or decaying material. They have thread-like structures called hyphae that release
enzymes to break down complex substances like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into simpler molecules outside the mold.
After breaking them down, the hyphae absorb these nutrients through their cell walls.
Fungi play a crucial role in biodegradation by breaking down complex organic materials, such as dead
plants, animals, and other natural substances, into simpler molecules. Through this process, fungi help
decompose and recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem, maintaining soil fertility and enabling the growth
of new plants.
Plenary
If these are the answers, what would be the question:
1. Answer: Plants have cell walls made of cellulose.
2. Answer: Animal store carbohydrate as glycogen.
3. Answer: Fungi reproduce by producing spores.
4. Molds, mushrooms, and yeast belong to the fungi kingdom.
5. A saprophyte is an organism, like fungi, that feeds on dead or
decaying organic matter.
SELF ASSESSMENT:
Question: What type of cell wall do plants have?
Question 2: How animal store carbohydrates?
Question 3: What role does the cell wall play in a prokaryotic cell?
Question 4: How fungi reproduce?
Question 5 : What are saprophytes?
