Specific Objectives;
 an Overview of Conic Sections
 definition and equation of a circle
 finding the Equation of a Circle
a.) Equation of a Circle Centered at (0,0)
b.) Circles with center Not at the Origin
Conic Sections
- A conic section is the intersection of a plane and
a cone.

- A conic section is a set of all points in plane

whose distances from a fixed point are in constant
ratio to their distances from a fixed line that is not
passing through the fixed.
Observe the shape of the slice that results. The
angle at which the cone is sliced produces four
different types of conic sections.
a cutting plane is parallel
to one and only one
generator

a cutting plane is parallel

to two generator

a cutting plane is NOT

parallel to any generator
P (x, y)

 Circle
A Circle is consist of all points on the plane
equidistant form a fixed point called the
Center. The distance from the center to any
point on the circles is constant and is called the
Radius of the circle.
 Standard Form of the Equation of a Circle

circle with center at

the origin or (0,0)
Example 1. Find the equation Example 2. Write the
of a circle with center the equation of a circle centered
origin and a radius of 5 units. at (0,3) and with radius 6.

center (0,3) and r = 6

center (0,0) and r = 5
h=0
k=3

Equation: x2 + y2 = r2 Equation: (x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2

x2 + y 2 = 52 (x - 0)2 + (y - 3)2 = 62

x2 + y2 = 25 x2 + (y - 3)2 = 36

Example 3. Write the Example 4. Write the
equation of a circle centered equation of a circle centered
at (2,-5) and with radius 10. at (1,5) and with radius √17.

center (1,5) and r = √17

center (2,-5) and r = 10
h=2 h=1
k = -5 k=5

Equation: (x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r

Equation: (x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2
(x - 2) + (y - (-5)
2 2
= 10
2 (x - 1)2 + (y - 5)2 = √172

(x - 1)2 + (y - 5)2 = 17
(x - 2)2 + (y + 5)2 = 100 Equation of the Circle

circle with center at the origin circle with center at the origin
Equation: x2 + y2 = r2 Equation: x2 + y2 = r2

x2 + y2 = 64
x2 + y2 = 19
√64 = 8
√19 - not a perfect number
x2 + y 2 = 8
The center of the circle is (0,0) and its radius x2 + y2 = √19
is 8 units The center of the circle is (0,0) and its
C (0,0) and r=8 radius is √19 units

C (0,0) and r=√19

Example 7. Find the center
and the radius of the circle Example 8. Find the center
and the radius of the circle
x2 + (y - 2)2 = 49. (x+7)2 + (y-5)2 = 56.
center of the circle is at the (h,k)
Equation: (x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2 Given Equation of a ciricle;
h=0
k=2

x2 + (y - 2)2 = 49 (x+7)2 + (y-5)2 = 56

h = 0 k = 2 √49 = 7

The center of the circle is (0,2) and its radius is 7 units

h = -7 k = 5 √56
C (0,2) and r=7
= 2√14

The center of the circle is (-7,5)

and its radius is 2√14 units
C (-7,5) and r=2√14
Specific Objectives;
 The General Form of the Equation of a
Circle
 Write the Equations in Standard Form
 Find the center and radius of the Circle
 The General Form of the Equation of
a Circle
The standard Form of the Equation of a circle (x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2 can
be presented in another form. By Squaring the binomials:
x2 + y2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0
This Equation is of the form x2 + y2 +
(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2 Standard form of the equation of a Circle Dx + Ey + F = 0, where D = -
2h, E = -2k, and F = h2 + k2 -
(x2 - 2hx + h2) + (y2 - 2ky + k2) =r2 expand square of binomial r.
x2 - 2hx + h2 + y2 - 2ky + k2 = r2 combine the terms after
From standard Form
x2 + y2 - 2hx - 2ky + h2 + k2 = r2 arrange the terms (x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2
x2 + y2 - 2hx - 2ky + h2 + k2 - r2 = 0 align -r to the term to equal 0 to General Form Equation of
a Circle
x2 + y2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0,
x2 + y2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0
Example 1: Write the general equation of a circle
with center (4,-1) and radius of 7 units.
In getting the standard form of (h = 4 ,k = -1) r = 7
(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2 (x - 4)2 + (y + 1)2 =
72
(x - 4)2 + (y + 1)2 = 49
x2 - 8x + 16 + y2 + 2y + 1 = 49
x2 + y2 - 8x + 2y + 17 - 49 = 0
x2 + y2 - 8x + 2y - 32 = 0
