Introduction
Sikkim is a State in Northeast India. It
borders Tibet in the north and
northeast, Bhutan in the east, Nepal in
the west and West Bengal in the south.
Sikkim is popularly known for its serene
beauty and clean environment. Sikkim
is the smallest state in India and is the
second least populated state in India.
Sikkim is known for the existence of
various religions, cultures, languages,
etc.
Climate Of Sikkim
Sikkim is one of the rainiest regions in India.
Most parts of the place experience torrential
rains during summers. The temperatures of a
particular place experiences varies
considerably with altitude. At places of low
altitude, like Singtam, Rangpo the
temperatures vary between 4 °C to 35 °C. So
Climate of Sikkim is pleasant , tropical and
even experiences thunders.
Flora and Fauna
Sikkim, with its mountains and lakes, has
acquired its maximum splendor owing to its
flora and fauna. Sikkim has approximately
5,000 blossoming plants, 515 extraordinary
orchids, 60 primula, more than 424
medicinal plants etc. The official flower of
Sikkim is Orchid Dendrobium Nobile. The
animal kingdom comprises Snow Leopard,
Musk Deer, Bhoral, Himalayan Tahr, Red
Panda,
Languages
Nepali is the primary language of Sikkim while Lepcha and
Sikkimese (Bhutia) are also spoken in some part of this
north-east province. English is also spoken by the people of
Sikkim. Other languages include Kafle, Limbu, Majhwar,
Yakha, Tamang, Tibetan, and Sherpa. People nearing the
tourist places in Sikkim uses Hindi and English to
communicate with the tourists.
Culture
Sikkim is a beautiful land of manifold tribes and races of people living
together. All these diverse tribes and communities have their unique
features in addition to their particular dance forms, festivals, languages,
culture, and craft forms. The miscellany of ethnic groups, religion, and
languages is seen all over Sikkim.
Dresses
The main costume worn in Sikkim is
the Bakhu. It is a loose cloak-like garb
which is tied at the neck and tightened
around the waist by a belt made of silk
or cotton. A scarf called Gorey is often
used to cover the head.To complete
the look, a type of belt called the
Nyamrek and Taro, a cap is worn.
Cuisine of

state. Momos is also

Sikkimese people.
Famous Tourist Places
Tourism in Sikkim gained popularity during the last decade with
an increasing number of tourists visiting this hilly region for its natural
beauty. Gangtok, Yuksom ,Nathula Pass ,Pelling,Namchi etc. Are some
most beautiful and must visit places in Sikkim.
Famous Festivals
• Saga Dawa
It is an important day for the Mahayana
Buddhists as it celebrates the three most
important phases of Gautama Buddha.
• International Flower Festival
This festival is held in Gangtok every year
in the month of May.
• Pang Lhabsol
It is unique as it celebrates nature. The
festival and all its celebrations are
surrounding the Kanchenjunga
Music and Dance

Sikkim is usually famous for Monastic


Dances. The reputed mask dances of
Sikkim are uniquely beautiful and these
dances, known as ‘Chaams’ are practised
during festivals and other ceremonial
events. Demons are exorcised in these
dances and Chaams dance is performed
during the celebrities of the New
Year ceremonies.
Art and craft
There are plenty of art and crafts form
in Sikkim. Handloom weaving, thanka
painting, wooden mask making, wood
curving are typical of Sikkim. Sikkim’s
wood carvings are true beauty of the
India’s real art. Wood carvings are
form of art that is used to
create ceremonial items etc Buddhist
art is the best known through the
thangka.
