Camote Tops (Ipomoea

batatas) and Labuag

(Hibiscus bifurcatus) Presented
By: Group 7
Leaves Extract as an
Alternative Ink for
Highlighters
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE
STUDY
Highlighters are reading tools used by students to give

emphasis to important details in books, journals and articles.

Making of highlighter pens require a number of different dyes

depending on the color that will be used. Yellow highlighters

commonly make use of a pyrene-based dye, such as pyranine;

Fluorescein can also be used (The Chemistry of Highlighter

Colours, 2016). Labuag (Hibiscus bifurcatus) leaves are rounded,

toothed, and deeply and palmately 3-lobed or 5-lobed. The

BACKGROUND OF THE
STUDY
Camote Tops (Ipomoea batatas) upper and lower surface of leaves is

olive green in color (Health Benefits of Sweet Potato Leaves, n.d.).

The researchers have thought of an idea to produce an

alternative ink for highlighters not only to lessen the expenses of

students but as well as to help in saving the environment by not

using harmful chemicals. The researchers believe that Camote Tops

(Ipomoea batatas) and Labuag (Hibiscus bifurcatus) leaves extract

have great potentials to become an alternative ink due to the

different advantages of it.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

 This study aims to find out if Camote Tops (Ipomoea batatas) and Labuag

(Hibiscus bifurcatus) leaves extract will work as an alternative ink for

highlighters. Specifically it aims to answer the following questions:

1. Does the extract of Camote Tops (Ipomoea batatas) work as an alternative

ink for highlighters?

a) Consistency

b) Flowing ability

c) Drying Time

d) Color Pay-off

e) Quality

2. Does the leaves extract of Labuag (Hibiscus bifurcatus)

work as an alternative ink for highlighters?

HYPOTHESIS

a) Camote Tops (Ipomoea batatas) extract does not

work as an alternative ink for highlighters.

b) Labuag (Hibiscus bifurcatus) leaves extract does

not work as an alternative ink for highlighters.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will be of great benefit of the

following:

Students. This study will be very beneficial to the students.

The making of an alternative ink will help the them lessen their

expenses in their school supplies because the ingredients of the

product are more accessible and cheap. It can give them an

affordable and eco-friendly option on what to use in studying.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Environment. The usage of chemical dyes will be

lessened because the dye that the highlighters will use comes

from a natural source. The highlighter will be really eco-friendly

considering the ingredients that was used in making it. It will

also not really harm the environment as long as the plants will

be replaced right away and also because the plants grow easily.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study mainly focuses in testing the Camote Tops (Ipomoea

batatas) and Labuag (Hibiscus bifurcatus) leaves extract if it will work

as an alternative ink for highlighters. The study limits its coverage in

testing the two variables which are Camote Tops (Ipomoea batatas)

and Labuag (Hibiscus bifurcatus) leaves extract as the independent

variables and the dependent variables are the flowing ability,

consistency, drying time, color pay-off and the quality of the

alternative ink. The experiment will be conducted next school year.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Color Pay-off – The appearance of the alternative ink color when

swatched in a paper.

Consistency – The texture of the alternative ink.

Drying Time – The time required for the alternative ink to settle in the

paper for it to be not affected by any conditions.

Flowing Ability - The capacity of the alternative ink to flow

continuously.

Quality – The distinctive characteristics of alternative ink.
