ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

ULTRAVIOLET RAYS
 Wavelength: 400nm -0.6nm
 Sources:
1. Halogen lamps with fused quartz
envelopes are used as inexpensive UV light
sources in the near UV range, from 400 to 300
nm, in some scientific instruments.
2. Sun
About 10% of the Sun's energy output is
UV. But it is deflected by ozone layer in the
atmosphere at an altitude of 40-50 km.
Sun produces 3 types of UV rays:
UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C

UV-C rays are the most harmful and are almost

completely absorbed by our atmosphere.
Exposure to UV radiation induces :
 the production of more melanin, causing

tanning of the skin

 Skin cancer (melanoma and nonmelanoma)
 Premature aging and other skin damage.
 Cataracts and other eye damage.
 Immune system suppression.
Uses:
1. LASIK
 'laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses‘
 a laser eye procedure performed to treat

various vision-related problems.

 the cornea is reshaped which enables the

light entering into the eye to focus on the

retina properly for clearer vision
 Due to SHORT WAVELENGTH, it can be

focussed to into very narrow beams for high

precision application
2. UV lamps are used to kill germs in water
purifiers
UV-C radiation kills or inactivates microbes by
damaging their deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
 Ozone Layer Depletion
INFRARED WAVES
 Wavelength: 780nm-1mm
 Lies adjacent to the low frequency or long
wave length end of the visible light spectrum
Why are they called Heat waves?

 Water molecules in most materials readily

absorb infrared waves( CO2 and NH3 also
absorb infrared waves)
 Thermal motion increases
 Heat up and heat their surroundings
Uses:
1. Infrared lamps – physical therapy

2. Maintaining the earth’s warmth or average

temperature through the greenhouse effect
Incoming visible light

Absorbed by earth’s surface and reradiated as

infrared

Trapped by greenhouse gases such as CO2 and

water vapours
3. Infrared detectors are used in Earth satellites
both for military purposes and to observe growth
of crops
Why?
 It offer an incredible opportunity to quickly

search large swaths of the planet

 For earth observation, infrared satellites detect

heat energy in the infrared range from the earth

and atmosphere. The satellite image displays
objects, such as; clouds, water, and land
surface, based on the temperature of the object.
4. Electronic devices also emit infrared and are
widely used in the remote switches of
household electronic systems such as TV sets,
video recorders
