NON MENDELIAN
PATTERN OF
INHERITANCE
MELC
Explain the different
patterns of Non
Mendelian Pattern of
Inheritance
MELC
• Explain the different patterns of non-Mendelian
inheritance; S9LT – 1d -29

The learners should be able to :

1. Define and describe multiple allele pattern of
inheritance
2. Solve problems involving multiple alleles
using a Punnett square

Do you know your blood type? What is your
blood type?

How about the blood type of your parents? If

your parents are blood type A and B, is it
possible for you to be type O?

There are four blood types (phenotypes) in
humans A, B, AB, O.
Blood types is controlled by three alleles: A, B,
O.
O is recessive, two O alleles must be present
to a person to have a blood type O.
A and Bare codominant. If a person receives
an A allele and a B allele their blood types is
type AB.

A woman with type AB blood marries a man with type

O blood and they have several children.
a. What percentage of offspring will have type AB
blood?
b. What fraction of offspring will have type A blood?

What’s Your Blood Type

OBJECTIVE :
Infer the unknown phenotypes of
individuals on the basis of the known
phenotypes of their family members.
Procedure
Given the blood types of the mother and the child,
identify the possible blood type of the father.

 What blood type (or types) can be found in an offspring if
a mother has a type A blood and the father has type B
blood?

Analyze the illustration:
1. How many types of alleles are
there? What are these?
• 3 (A, B, O)
2. How many possible genotypes are
formed out of these alleles?
• 6
3. How many phenotypes can be
expressed?
• 4
4. Which is dominant, allele A or B?
• Both are dominant
5. Which allele is recessive?
• O

The ABO blood typing system groups your blood
into one of four categories:

Type A has the A antigen

Type B has the B antigen
Type AB has both A and B antigens
Type O has neither A nor B antigens

in the body stimulates the production of antibody.

Both Jeremy and Donna have type AB BLOOD.
What are the possible blood types of their
offspring?
If a boy has a blood type O and his sister has
a blood type AB , what are the genotypes and
phenotypes of their parents?

You are a scientific consultant in a paternity suit. A
type A woman is suing a type B man for being the
father of type O child. Suddenly, in the middle of the
proceedings, the man’s mother rushes in and says
“My son could not be the father of a type O child. I
am type O.” The judge turns to you for an advice.
What would you say?
For Group 1
1. Assign 4 male students to act as the father, 4 female students to act
as the mother and 4 students to act as offspring.
2. Each student assigned as father, mother and offspring will be given
a flashcard with label Type A, Type B, Type AB and Type O.
3. They will look for their family member given the situation below.
a. A type O woman marries a type A man. Who among the children in the
group is/are their offspring?
b. Who is the father of a type B child if the blood type of her/his mother
is type AB?
c. The four children of a couple ha the four blood types. If the father is
type B, what is the blood type of the mother?
For Group 2
Show the possible alleles that can be found in each
offspring and write the blood type
