What is an Adverb?
An adverb is a word which modifies a verb , an
adjective and another adverb
In the following examples, each of the
highlighted words is an adverb:

Examples:
They walk quickly.
He is very nice.
They work very carelessly.

1. Adverb of Manner
Adverbs of manner show in how in what manner an
action happens or happened.
Example:
Adverbs of manner answer the question of “How”
Example:
He speaks softly. How he speaks? Softly
Adverbs of manner are made by adding “ly” to an
adjective.
Example of Adverb of manner:
quickly , bravely , happily , hard, fast , well, clearly ,
possibly, unfortunately , luckily , sadly ,

Adverbs of manner –
position
Adverbs of manner are usually placed after
the main verb.
He swims fast.
She writes beautifully.

It is possible to place the adverb before the


verb. This places emphasis on the adverb.
She quickly finished her dinner.

But some adverbs are always placed
after the verb.

These adverbs are: well, badly, fast.

Examples:
The team played well.
He performed badly.

They are adverbs which show location and
direction.
They are here , there , up , down , near , below etc.
Adverb of place answers the question (where?)

Example:
Ahmad stayed there.
He stood near the gate.
Please , come here.
He is outside.

3.Adverbs of
Frequency
An Adverb of frequency is used to show
how often an action is done is known as
an adverb of frequency .

Note: once , twice , often , never , always ,


occasionally , seldom, sometimes .
Adverb of frequency ansers the question (how
often?).
Examples :
The children always go to school on the
bus.
I clean my bedroom every day.
David polishes his shoes twice a week.

4. Adverbs of Time:
An Adverb used to show when an action is done is
known as an adverb of time.

They are now, then , today , tomorrow , early ,


soon , still , before , ago , daily , never , lately , yet.
Adverb of time answer the questions of (When?).

Examples:
My father is not home yet.
He will come home soon.
They came late yesterday.

5.Adverbs of Certainty
An Adverb used to show definiteness of the
action is known as an adverb of certainty.

They are certainly , surely , definitely , obviously


Examples:

Surely , he loves me.

I shall certainly help you.

Ahmad is obviously very clever

6. Adverbs of degree
 An Adverb is used to show how much or
in what degree or to what extent an
action is done is known as an Adverb of
Degree .
Adverb of degree answers the questions how much or
in what degree or to what extent.

Note : very , quite , too , almost , fully , enough ,


pretty , so
Examples:
we have eaten enough.
I am feeling much better.
He is very great.

7.Interogative Adverb.
 An adverb used to ask question is known as
an interrogative Adverb.

They are where , when , why and how.


Examples:
When do you come?
Where is he studying?
Why is he late today?

8. Relative Adverb:
An Adverb used to relate two clauses or
statements is known as a Relative Adverb.
They are ( where , when , why )
Examples:
I don’t know where he had gone.
Monday is the day when Moh’d(S) was
born.
I don’t know why he is late?
