THE INDETERMINATE FORMS

•Theorem: L’Hospital Rule or LHR

If , then

provided that the latter exist

THE INDETERMINATE FORMS
•LHR states that to evaluate the limit of the fraction that
takes the form at x = a, differentiate the numerator and
denominator separately and then take the limit of the new
fraction . In case the new fraction assumes again the form ,
the process may be repeated, reapply LHR.

•Note: before reapplying the LHR at any stage, simplify first

the new quotient whenever possible.
THE INDETERMINATE FORMS
•I. The Indeterminate Forms

•If , then the function defined by is said to have

the indeterminate form at x = a. To evaluate ,
we apply LHR.
THE INDETERMINATE FORMS
If , then the fraction defined by is said to
have the indeterminate form at x = a. LHR is
also applicable for this form.
THE INDETERMINATE FORMS
•II. The Indeterminate Forms

•If , then the function defined by the product of f(x)g(x) is said to have the
indeterminate form at x = a. Forms of this type can be change into the form
so that LHR can be applied. To effect this change, we rewrite f(x)g(x) into any
of the following forms:

•In general, one form is better than the other but the choice depend upon the
given product f(x) g(x).
