NETWORKING
CONCEPTS
By Aaliya Khan (VIII-A)
INTRODUCTION TO
NETWORKING:

•Definition: Networking refers to the practice of connecting computers and other devices
together
•to share resources.

•Importance: Enables communication, data exchange, and resource sharing.

TYPES OF NETWORK:

• Local Area Network (LAN): Covers a small geographic area, like a home or office.
• Wide Area Network (WAN): Spans large geographic areas, such as cities or
countries.
• Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): Covers a larger area than a LAN but smaller
than a WAN, like a city.
• Personal Area Network (PAN): For personal use, such as connecting a laptop
and a smartphone via Bluetooth.
• Virtual Private Network (VPN): Extends a private network across a public
network, enabling secure connections.
NETWORK TOPOLOGIES:
•Bus Topology: All devices share a single communication line.

•Star Topology: All devices are connected to a central hub.

•Ring Topology: Devices are connected in a circular manner.

•Mesh Topology: Every device is connected to every other device.

•Hybrid Topology: Combination of two or more topologies.

NETWORKING DEVICES:

• Router: Forwards data packets between computer networks.

• Switch: Connects devices within a LAN and uses MAC addresses to forward data.
• Hub: Basic device that connects multiple computers in a network (less intelligent
than a switch).
• Modem: Modulates and demodulates signals for communication over telephone
lines.
• Access Point: Allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi.
NETWORKING COMPONENTS:

• Network Interface Card (NIC): Hardware component that connects a computer

to a network.
• Cables and Connectors: Includes Ethernet cables (CAT5, CAT6) and connectors
(RJ45).
• Firewall: Security device that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing
network traffic.
• Servers: Provide resources and services to other computers in the network.
NETWORKING SECURITY:
• Threats: Viruses, malware, phishing, and hacking.
• Security Measures: Firewalls, antivirus software, encryption, and secure passwords.
• Best Practices: Regular updates, strong authentication methods, and network monitoring.
CONCLUSION:
