What is a
Computer?
• A computer is a smart
machine that helps us do
many things like play games,
learn, and talk to friends.
• A computer has different parts
like a screen (monitor), a
keyboard, a mouse, and a
box (CPU).
• There are also laptops, which
are small computers you can
carry around, and tablets,
which are like a mix of a
computer and a phone.
• Monitor: This is like a TV screen. It shows us
pictures, words, and videos.

• Keyboard: This is like a big board with lots

of buttons called keys. We press these keys
to type letters and numbers.
• Mouse: This is a small device that we
move with our hand. It helps us click
on things on the monitor.

• CPU (Central Processing Unit): This

is like the brain of the computer. It
thinks and does all the important work.

• Printer: This is a machine that helps

us put what we see on the monitor
onto paper.
How does a
Computer Work?
• When we use a computer, we
give it commands by typing on
the keyboard or clicking the
mouse.
• The CPU reads these
commands and does what we
ask it to do.
• Then, we can see the results
on the monitor.

or instructions.

Process: This is when the computer thinks

about what we told it and decides what to do. Example: If we type a math problem, the computer

answer or completes the task.
Input Devices

 Input devices help us put information

into the computer.

 An input device is something we use to

tell the computer what to do.

 It's like a way to talk to the computer and

give it instructions.
• What it looks like: A big board with lots of
buttons called keys.
Keyboard: • What it does: We use it to type letters,
numbers, and symbols into the computer.

• What it looks like: A small device that fits

in your hand, usually with buttons.
Mouse: • What it does: We move it around to point
and click on things on the computer screen.

• What it looks like: A small device that you

Microphone talk into.
• What it does: It records your voice or lets
: you talk to the computer.
• What it looks like: A stick that you
can move in different directions, often
with buttons.
Joystick: • What it does: We use it to play games
by moving characters or objects on the
screen.

• What it looks like: A flat machine

with a glass top.
Scanner: • What it does: It copies pictures or
documents and puts them into the
computer.

Web • What it looks like: A small camera

Camera that connects to the computer.
• What it does: It takes videos or
(Webcam) pictures of you, so you can talk to
others or take selfies.

Processing
Device
• A processing device is a very important part of a
computer. It's like the computer's brain.

• Here’s a simple way to understand it:

• Name:
• CPU (Central Processing Unit)
• What it looks like:
• It's a small chip inside the computer.
• What it does:
• It thinks and works on the information we give to
the computer.
• It follows instructions to make everything happen.
Features of
CPU
• Fast Thinker: The CPU is very
quick at thinking and solving
problems.
• Hard Worker: It can do many
jobs at the same time.
• Brain of the Computer: It
makes all the decisions and
controls everything in the
computer.
Parts of CPU
Control Unit:
• What it does:
• Tells the other parts of the computer what to do.
• Example:
• Like a teacher giving instructions in a classroom.
Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU):
• What it does:
• Does all the math calculations and makes decisions
• .Example:
• Like a calculator solving math problems.
Memory Unit (MU):
• What they do:
• Small memory spaces that store information the CPU is using
right now.
• Example:
• Like a notepad where you write quick notes.

t of CPU
Output Devices

• Output devices help the computer

give us information.
• An output device is something the
computer uses to show us what
it’s doing.
• It’s like the computer talking back
to us or showing us pictures and
sounds.
What it looks like: A
screen, like a TV. Also called
as VDU(Visual Display Unit)

Monitor What it does: Shows us

pictures, words, and videos.
Example: When you play a
game or watch a cartoon,
you see it on the monitor.

What they look like: Small

boxes that make sound.
What they do: Play sounds
and music from the
Speakers computer.
Example: When you listen
to music or hear the sounds
in a game, the speakers are
making those sounds.

What it looks like: A

machine with a paper tray.
What it does: Puts
pictures, words, and

Printer drawings from the computer

onto paper.
Example: When you make a
drawing on the computer
and want to have it on
paper, you use the printer.
Two common
type of
Monitors

• Cathode Ray Tube

(CRT)
• Liquid Crystal
Display (LCD)
Storage
Devices
• Storage devices save
information so we can use it
later.
• A storage device is something
that helps the computer save
information so you can use it
later.
• It's like a special box where
the computer keeps all your
drawings, games, and
homework safe.
 Hard Disk

• What it looks like: A box inside the computer or a small, portable box.
• What it does: Stores all your files, like pictures, videos, and games,
for a long time.
• Example: Like a big closet where you keep your toys and books so
you can use them whenever you want.

 CD/DVD

• What it looks like: A shiny, round disc.

• What it does: Stores information like music, movies, or software.
• Example: Like a music CD you listen to in a player or a DVD you
watch on a DVD player. You can put it into the computer to access the
information.

 Pen drive (USB Flash Drive)

• What it looks like: A small stick that you can plug into the computer.
• What it does: Stores files and makes it easy to carry them around.
• Example: Like a little backpack where you keep important things you
want to take with you, like homework or photos.
Hardware
 Hardware is the physical parts of a computer that
you can touch and see.

 Think of it like the body of a computer.

 Examples of Hardware:

• Monitor
• Keyboard
• Mouse
• CPU (Central Processing Unit)
• Printer
• Speakers
Software
 Software is like the instructions or programs that tell the computer what
to do.

 You can't touch software; it's like the brainpower or thoughts of the computer.

 Examples of Software:

• Games: Fun programs like "Minecraft" or "Angry Birds" that you play on
the computer.
• Word Processor: Programs like "Microsoft Word" that let you write
letters, stories, and reports.
• Browser: Programs like "Google Chrome" that let you visit websites on
the internet.
• Drawing Program: Programs like "Paint" where you can draw pictures
using the computer.
• Music Player: Programs that play music and let you listen to your
favorite songs.
 System Software

• It helps the computer work properly.

• It's like the boss of all the other software.
• Imagine it like the school principal who makes sure everything runs
smoothly.
• Example: Windows, macOS, and Linux.

 Application Software

• It helps you do specific tasks on the computer.

• It's like the different teachers who help you learn different subjects.
• Examples :Games, Word Processor, Browser,Drawing Program,
Music Player
