Past Simple Tense
• I went to the cinema with my best friend last night. I had a great time!
• Did the action happen in the present, future or past time?
It happened in the past time.
• How do we understand it?
Because it says “went”, “had” and “last night”.
• Are these completed actions in the past?
Yes, they are completed actions that happened in the past.
In affirmative sentences, we use the past form of the
verbs. In regular verbs, we add “-ed, -ied, or –d” to the
verb to use it in the past time.
Remember Spelling Rules

• Most verbs ( +ed)


walk→walked play →played

• Verbs ending in e (+d)


live →lived use →used

• Verbs ending in a consonant + y


cry →cried carry →carried

• Short verbs ending in a vowel + a consonant (vowel: a, e, i, o, u)
