Research Recap
Why research is important
● Research lets you prove your work is significant
○ You know it’s unique because you’ve researched existing work
○ You know it’s important because you’ve researched real world issues and debates
○ You know it’s effective because you’ve researched it’s impact with audiences

● Research lets you expand the scope of your work

○ Connect your work with a broader range of issues and topics
○ Engage with a wider variety of audiences and collaborators
○ Discover different contexts for your work

● Research is a useful professional skill

○ Supports interdisciplinarity
○ Is used in many IED graduate careers
Why rigour is important.
● Ethics - It’s essential to make sure your research does no harm to
yourself or others.
● Transparency - Being clear about your methodology allows others
to know how you got your results, and in what contexts they are
valid.
● Reproducibility - A clear and effective methodology allows others
to test your results, or apply them to their own work.
● Trust - All of this allows other people to trust your research. If you
can’t prove your research is trustworthy, you will not be able to use
it.

Questions?
Activity 1: Finding Your Context - 45 mins
This first task is about finding the existing references and contexts
which support your work.

1. Identify 3 references which are important for your project.

Try to choose different types of reference (e.g. a book, an artwork,
an article, a performance, an interview etc.)
2. Analyse the context for these references. Where did you find
them? Who published them? How are they archived or distributed?
3. Add these to your Padlet and share with your group. Go
round your group so everyone has a chance to discuss their
references.
Activity 2: Writing for Context - 45 mins
In this task you will start aligning your project with a specific context.
1. Choose one destination context from the examples you
found in Activity 1. E.g. a particular journal, conference, festival,
magazine, etc. Select one that is most relevant to your work.
2. Look at more examples from this context and analyse the
style of writing. How is work introduced in this context? What kind
of information is important?
3. Draft a 200 word description of your project using this style.
4. Upload to Padlet!
