with the lesson?

Two Types Of Set

Well-Defined Not Well-Defined

• Group of
Kapampangan • Set of good people
Delicacies • The favorite food of
• Set of Mathematics learners
teachers in ATHS • Best actors
• Positive odd number
more than 13
Time to Think!!!

well-defined and
share it in the chat
box.

Roster Method
Notation Method
defines a set by listing specifies a set as a
its elements between selection
curly from a larger set,
brackets, separated by determined by
commas. a condition on the
elements.
Roster Method
Example #2
Example #1
B = {Blue,
A = {4, 2, 1, 3} Orange, Red,
Yellow, Indigo,
Example #3 Violet,#4Green}
Example

C = {1, 2, 3, 4, D = {-1, -2, -3, -4, -

5, ...} 5, ...}

Example #1
B = {x|x is a
A = {x|x is a whole

number between 0
and 5}
Example #3 Example #4
C = {x|x is a D = {x|x is an
name of month} integer}
Take Note!!!
The ordering of the elements in roster notation is irrelevant.
Ex: {2, 4, 6} and {4, 6, 2} represent the same set.
Ellipsis (...) can be used as an abbreviation for sets with
many
elements and infinite sets.

Ex: the set of the first thousand positive integers –

{1, 2, 3, ..., 1000}

The symbol | is read as “such that.”

Symbols, And
Examples
Element - Member of a set.

Numbers, letters of the alphabet or any other object in a set
are called elements of the set. They are usually written
inside a pair of curly (idle) braces and are separated by
commas.

Example: The collection of vowels except e in the English

alphabet.

Solution: We can denote the set of vowels as V= {a, i, o, u}.

- Number of
Cardinality members in a set
The number of elements in a finite set is called its cardinal

()
number. It is denoted as n(A) and read as ‘the number of
elements of set’ A.

Examples:
1.) X = {vowels in the word ASSUMPTA
Then, X = {A,U}
Therefore, cardinal number of set X is 2, in symbol; n(X) = 2

2.) M = {natural numbers between 10 and 40 which are

divisible by 7}
Null Set - Empty Set.

∅ A set that does not contain any element is called an empty

or set, null set, or void set and is denoted by ∅ (read as phi).

{} Example: The set of positive numbers less than 0.

There is no positive number less than 0. Therefore, it’s an
empty set.
N = ∅ or N = { }
Universal Set- Contains all
elements under
A set that contains all the consideration
elements of other given sets is called a

u
universal set.

Examples:
1.) If A = {1, 2, 3}
B = {2, 3, 4}
C = {3, 5, 7}
Then, U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7}

2.) If A = {a, b, c}
B = {d, e}
Subset - Part of a certain
set.
Every set is a subset of itself. Null/Empty set (∅) is a subset of

every set.

Example: Set C = {1, 2, 3}

Solutions: Its subsets are ∅, {1}, {2}, {3}, {1, 2}, {2, 3}, {1, 3},
{1, 2, 3}

To identify the number of subsets of a set use the formula 2ⁿ

where “n” is the number of elements of the given set.
Let’s Try This!
I. Direction: Encircle the letter of the correct
answer.
1.Which of the following is a subset of M = {odd numbers less than
12}?
a.) {3,6,9,12} b.) {1,3,5,7,9,11} c.) {2,4,6,8,10}
2.Which of the following is a null set?
a.) {months with 28 days} b.) {odd numbers divisible by 2}
c.) {Malls in Pampanga}
3.What is the cardinality of B = {0, 1, 2, 3, …, 10}?
a.) 10 b.) 11 c.) 12
4.Given A = {1, 4, 5} and B = {5, 4}, which of the following
statement is true?
a.) B ⊆ A b.) A ⊆ B c.) Both a and b
5.What is the universal set for Y = {Tuesday, Thursday, Friday}?
a.) {days of the weeks that starts with T} b.) {weekends}
c.) {weekdays}
Let’s Try This!
I. Direction: Give a verbal description of each
of the following sets.
1.{a, e, i, o, u}
_______________________________________________________
2.{1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
_______________________________________________________
3.{Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, …, Saturday}
_______________________________________________________
Let’s Try This!
I. Direction: Determine the cardinality of each
of the following sets.
1. B = { , , } n(B) = _____________________
2. C = { } n(C) = _____________________
3. D = {colors of the rainbow} n(D) = _____________________
