Ferrets!

Ferret History

 Ferrets were domesticated about

2,500 years ago. Historically,
ferrets were used to hunt rabbits
and rodents. Their lean bodies
and curious nature make ferrets
naturals at getting down holes to
chase rodents and rabbits out of
burrows.
z
Mating

 Mating in ferrets can be

vigorous, prolonged and
noisy, with the male
grasping the female by
the scruff of the neck
and dragging her around
the cage. Gestation lasts
40 to 44 days. An
average of eight kits is
born, weighing
approximately 6 to 12g.
z
Wild Ferret Diet

 In the wild, ferrets largely

consume small mammals
such as rabbits, mice, rats,
and other rodents. However,
they are very opportunistic
hunters and will also eat
other species such as fish,
birds, reptiles, and
sometimes even insects.
z
House Ferret Diet

 You can feed your ferret cooked or

raw chicken along with the pellets.
Chicken baby food is acceptable
as a supplement to the pellet diet,
too. Remember that the dry food is
an important staple, as it helps to
keep their teeth clean.
z
Lifespan

 Ferret lifespan will depend on a

number of important factors,
including genetics, nutrition,
activity level, and care. The
average lifespan of pet ferrets
is 5-7 years. With a proper diet,
healthy activity levels, and
routine care, pet ferrets can live
up to 10 years or more. The
oldest ferret on record is 14
years.
z
Ferrets as Pets

 They are lively, curious and

fun-loving pets, and they’re
very social. This means that
they can make great pets, but
they’re not the easiest to
handle and can bite hard if
startled. So they don’t always
make good pets for children.
z
Ferret Health

 Ferrets have a very weak

immune system, and can
catch a cold from their human
family. A cold that might just
keep you out of work for a
couple of days could prove
fatal to a ferret, so always
keep away from your ferrets
when sick. Ferrets have a
very low tolerance to heat and
cold.

Ferret Hunting

 Ferrets were domesticated

about 2,500 years ago.
Historically, ferrets were used
to hunt rabbits and rodents.
Their lean bodies and curious
nature make ferrets naturals
at getting down holes to
chase rodents and rabbits out
of burrows. This is the origin
of the expression “ferret out.”
z
Ferret Exercise

 Ferrets are energetic, social

animals that require a great deal
of play and interaction. At a
minimum, ferrets need 2 to 4
hours every day outside their
cage to remain healthy. Leave
the door of the cage open so that
the ferret has access to food,
water, and the litter box.
