High Speed Engines Versus Medium Speed for Tugs

Applications

Basic technical comparison:
BRAND MTU (high speed engine) YANMAR (medium speed engine)
Model 16v 4000 M63R 6EY26

Rating (bkw) 1920 1920

RPM 1600 750

Major overhaul 36,000 hours 12,000 hours

Weight (kg) 8,950 18,500
BSFC (g/kwh) 201.1 (+/-5%) 195 (+/-5%)

Brake specific fuel consumption is higher in MTU High speed engines with difference around 6.1
g/kwh, BUT ONLY during high load conditions.

• High load conditions describe around 5-10% of any Tugboat

operation
• Most time distribution of a Tugboat is between 10% - 60%
loading conditions
• How does the fuel efficiency between the two engines during
Disadvantages
low loading conditions?
Advantages
Minimum Savings that MTU Engines offer
Highest operating Time consumption (70% of time) = Tug loading conditions < 60%
215 g/kwhr
X-axis: Engine load %
MTU Fuel consumption (+/-5%)
225 g/kwhr
Y-axis: Time distribution %
YANMAR Fuel consumption (+/-5%)
MTU Fuel Savings % per 1 Engine 4.5% g/kwhr

Assuming Fuel MDO 1 MT price is 200$ , savings you get per Engine 9 $/hr

Asuming Tug operation hours per year 3000 hrs

70% of time tug operation hours per year (load below 60%) 2100 hrs

$37,800.00
Minimum Savings on 2 Engines (1 Tug) in USD per year
Savings in lifetime cycle (20 years) in USD $756,000.00

As shown, Time distribution illustrates that Tugs operate mostly below

60% load conditions, High speed MTU Engines are more efficient below
60% as well, which could save you 30K – 50k USD / year.

While medium speed Engines are efficient above 60% load conditions
which represents 10% of Time distribution, in other words 300 operating
hours per year, which could save you 3K – 5K USD/ year.

Medium speed engines are efficient ONLY at high loads (over 60%)
Tugboats operating profile and MTU
Engines

MTU fuel consumption is efficient than Yanmar’s Medium speed during 87.5 % Tug operating conditions
(below 60% loading conditions as previously stated)
Quick response, High maneuvering and better
fuel consumption
• 500 rpm to full speed in a 10-17 sec. period, compared to medium speed engines 450 rpm to 750 rpm
in 45 sec.

• High speed engines have a wider operating band from idle to full load with much stronger acceleration

• Fuel economy is maximized when acceleration time is minimized

17 sec
450 – 750 rpm 45 sec

Acceleration time and operating RPM Band - comparison at maximum power 0-100%
How MTU Engines are efficient during load
variation?
The electronic control system (ECU) Controls:
1. start of injection
2. The quantity of Fuel
3. Time of injection
And independent of the engine speed.

Precise control of fuel volume delivery at high pressure,

fuel consumption can also be dramatically reduced. This is
the reason why MTU implemented a technology change
from conventional mechanical injection systems to the
flexible and electronically controlled.

Accurately metering the quantity of fuel injected in order

to create the conditions required for low emission
combustion inside the cylinder.

Common rail Fuel injection system

MTU dimensions capabilities
• High speed engines are significantly smaller and can be fitted in small engine rooms of modern ship assist tugs

• Much easier engine installation due to there smaller size

• High speed engines reduce maximum torque in drive line components such as shafts, bearings, clutches and flexible
couplings, reducing initial cost and long term maintenance...more savings!

• For ASD tugs the low engine height (1.8m) and the possibility of applying 7 degree inclination angle (driving end up)
allow less intermediate bearings installment.

Size L*W*H (mm) 3270*1570*2370 4930*1750*3270 4563*1804*3112

Weight (kg) 8,950 16,000 18,500

Weight of 2 MTU Engines = 1 Medium speed Engine

Size of 1.5 MTU Engines = 1 Medium speed Engine
Note: The above comparison not including peripheral parts
Less initial Investment compared to Medium
Speed
• Accessories of MTU engines like coolant or raw water pumps, heat exchanger etc. are typically engine
mounted, hence they do not have to be purchased and installed separately

• less initial investment and installation costs

What else does a High Speed MTU engine offer?
1. Lowest Magnetic signature compared to others
2. Lowest noise
3. Longest TBO (time between overhaul) compared to others
4. High power to weight density
5. Lower investment in engine, accessories and propulsion
line
6. Easier installation (new building and repower)
7. IMO Tier III (NOx emission reduced to 75%)
