Present Simple Tense


MEANING
We use this tense for;

- Permanent states, repeated actions and daily routines


eg.
He works in a bank. ( permanent state)
He takes the bus to work every morning. ( repeated action/ routine)

- General truths
eg.
The sun rises in the east.

MEANING
We use this tense for;

- Timetables ( plane, bus, train,etc.) and programmes


eg.
The plane to Rome leaves at 10 pm.

- Sports commentaries, reviews and narration


eg.
Falcao passes the ball and Donk scores a goal. ( commentary)
Di Caprio plays the part of Jake in Titanic. ( review)

- Give instructions or directions


eg.
Grate some cheese on the egg and then mix them.

Present Simple Tense


TIME EXPRESSIONS
Every……(day, year, etc.), in the morning/ afternoon /evening, at night, at the weekend, on Sundays,
once/ twice/ … a day/year/ month, etc.

For adverbs of frequencies


Always, usually, often, generally, sometimes, rarely, hardly ever, never

TIME EXPRESSIONS
- We use adverbs of frequencies before the main verb.
Eg. Brian often goes skiing at the weekend.
Jim never lies to his friends and family.

- But after verb TO BE.


Eg. Sam is sometimes rude to other people.
I am never late to class.

- Expressions with two or more words can go at the beginning or at the end of a sentence.
Eg. We go on holiday twice a year.
Twice a year we go on holiday.

Action Verbs State Verbs
Go, jump, swim, crawl, write, climb, kick, etc. State verbs describe a state rather than an action and
Used both with simple and continuous tenses: therefore do not normally have continuous tenses.

My father writes to me every month. (habit) Love, like, know, believe, understand, belong, need, etc.
My father is writing a story right now. (action)
My uncle owns a hotel.
I love chocolate icecream.
My teacher believes in hard work.
That bag belongs to Julia.

Some of the state verbs can be used in continuous forms when they describe actions
Eg.
I think he is lying. (believe)
I am thinking about the plan. (consider)

I can see the plane in the distance. (perceive)


I see what you mean. ( understand)

Bob has a Ferrari. (possess)


Bob is having breakfast at the moment. (eat)

He appears to be nervous. (seem)


He is appearing in a new play. ( take part in)

MEANING
We use this tense for;
- Actions taking place at the moment of speaking
Eg.
He is giving the baby a bath at the moment.

- temporary actions, that are going on around the moment of speaking


Eg.
It is raining hard these days.

We use this tense for;
- With ‘always’ to express annoyance, irritation or anger
Eg.
You are always interrrupting me when I am talking.

- Changing or developing situations


Eg.
The earth is getting warmer and warmer everyday.

MEANING
We use this tense for;

- an action which started in the past and continues up to present


eg.
Rachel has had the dog for three years. (She got the dog three years ago and she still has it.)

- An action which has recently finished and whose result is visible in the present.
eg.
She has just washed her hair. ( Her hair is clean now)

- An action which has happened in a specific period of time which is not over at the time of speaking.

Present Perfect Continuous Tense


MEANING
We use this tense to;

- Put an emphasis on the duration of an action which started in the past and continues up to present.
eg.
My father has been talking on the phone for half an hour.

- For an action which started in the past and lasted for some time.
eg.
Her feet hurt. She has been walking all morning. ( The result of an action is visible in the present.)

MEANING
We use this tense for;

- An action which was in progress at a stated time in the past.


eg.
At seven o’clock yesterday evening I was playing football with my friends.

- An action which was in progress when another action interrupted it.


eg.
He was walking down the road when Pete ran into an old friend.

- Two or more simultaneous actions.

She was talking on her mobile phone while she was driving to work.

- To describe the atmosphere or setting in a story
