IN MATHEMATICS, A 'NUMBER SYSTEM' IS A SET OF NUMBERS, TOGETHER WITH ONE OR MORE OPERATIONS, SUCH AS ADDITION OR MULTIPLICATION.

BASIC CONCEPTS

NATURAL NUMBERS WHOLE NUMBERS INTEGERS RATIONAL NUMBERS IRRATIONAL NUMBERS

NATURAL NUMBERS WHOLE NUMBERS THE INTEGERS THE RATIONAL NUMBERS THE IRRATIONAL NUMBERS

Rational numbers and Irrational numbers together forms a collection of Real numbers. All natural numbers are rational numbers but not vice versa. All whole numbers are rational numbers but not vice versa. All integers are rational numbers but not vice versa.

NATURAL NUMBERS are the numbers 1, 2, 3 They are used for counting.

Natural Numbers

WHOLE NUMBERS If we include zero then we get the whole numbers 0, 1, 2, 3

Whole Numbers

Now for each of the numbers 1, 2, 3 lets create its opposite or negative and put it on the opposite side of the number line, like this:

The set of numbers , 3, 2, 1, 0, 1, 2, 3 (the whole numbers and their opposites) is called the integers.

A rational number is a number that can be in the form p/q. Where p & q are integers and q is not equal to zero. A rational number is any number that can be expressed as the quotient of two integers. We can use any of these Fraction notations to express rational numbers

a is called the numerator and b is called the denominator. The denominator cannot be zero.

The irrational numbers are those that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers.
Examples are as well as the square roots of many other numbers, and special numbers like e and . It turns out that there are as many irrational numbers as rational. Irrational numbers have no exact decimal equivalents. To write any irrational number in decimal notation would require an infinite number of decimal digits. Thus these are only approximations: 1.732, e 2.718 and 3.14,

Pi is a famous irrational number. People have calculated Pi to over one million decimal places and still there is no pattern. The first few digits look like this: 3.1415926535897932384626433832795 (and more ...) The number e (Euler's Number) is another famous irrational number. People have also calculated e to lots of decimal places without any pattern showing. The first few digits look like this: 2.7182818284590452353602874713527 (and more ...) The Golden Ratio is an irrational number. The first few digits look like this: 1.61803398874989484820... (and more ...)

Many square roots, cube roots, etc are also irrational numbers. Examples: 1.7320508075688772935274463415059 (etc) 9.9498743710661995473447982100121 (etc)

But 4 = 2 (rational), and 9 = 3 (rational) ... ... so not all roots are irrational.
