Probability Distributions

of Discrete Random
Variables
By: Ma’am Rogen
Objectives
●Illustrate the probability distribution for discrete
random variables and its properties;
●Compute probabilities corresponding to a given
discrete random variable; and
●Construct the probability mass function of a
discrete random variable and its corresponding
histogram.
Let’s Recall!
Suppose two coins are tossed, let Z be the
random variable representing the number of heads
that occur. Find the values of the random variable Z.

Discrete Probability Distribution

A discrete probability distribution is a

table showing all the possible values of a
discrete random variable together with
their corresponding probabilities.
A probability distribution has
two (2) requirements:

1. Each probability P(x) must be between or

equal to 0 and 1; that is
2. The sum of all probabilities is 1; that is .
Example 1: A fair of coin is tossed twice.
Let X be the number of heads that are
observed.
a) Construct the probability distributions of
X.
b) Find the probability that at least one head
is observed.
𝐒= {𝑻𝑻 ,𝑻𝑯,𝑯𝑯,𝑯𝑻 }
Possible Value of the random a) This is the probability distribution

probability distribution is given below.

denotes the sum of the number of dots on the
top faces.
