Topic 7 Lesson 5

The document discusses how plants and animals respond to environmental stimuli, highlighting the communication methods of elephants and the survival strategies of various animals. It explains the importance of adaptations for survival in changing environments, noting behaviors like group formation for safety, hibernation, and migration. Additionally, it emphasizes that species unable to adapt may face extinction.

Topic 7 Lesson 5

Plant and animal responses to the

environment

Nerve signal is sent to the brain
Stimulus The brain interprets the signal
The brain sends messages telling the body how
to respond

Example : Elephants receive information through their sense of

sight, hearing, and touch.
Most elephants form family groups
The oldest elephant leads other elephants to find water
It uses the direction of its body to signal to other elephants
Which way they should go.
Elephants use their trunks to make loud calls to signal the other
elephants of danger
In their environments.
The older elephants will form a circle around the younger elephants to
protect them

Elephants use low rumbling sounds to communicate with each other

Elephants feel the vibration of sound with their feet
Throughout the ground
Human cannot hear these sounds
Animal responses to smell
Some animals have a sense of smell that is much stronger than that
of humans .
Animals with a keen sense of smell include bears, sharks, dogs, and
snakes
They use their keen sense to find food or to observe that another
animal is nearby.
If they identify the approaching animal as an enemy,
They can hide.
Snakes collect scent through their nostrils, through their tongue is better
Changing environments and survival
Environments can change, and plants and animals must be
able to survive.

Plants and animals that have adaptations to live in the new

environment will survive.

If an environment changes and a particular kind of plant

cannot survive there, that kind of organism may become
extinct

Extinct : No more of that kind of organism live on Earth

Behaviors and survival
Many animal behaviors help animals
survive
• Deer form groups for safety
Animals that stick together are often better able
to
communicate that a predator is near.

• Bear hibernate (sleep) in cold weather when food is scarce.

• While it hibernates, a bear does not need as much energy from food.
z

Penguins do not hibernate, so they form huddles

to survive cold winter climates
z

Animals that not adapted

to the cold migrate

Many birds fly south for the

winter to avoid colder
temperature
and fly north again when it
warmer
