First to establish labor welfare practices In 1912, Sidney and Beatrice Webb, the Founders of the London School of Economics prepared Memorandum of Health for the Steel City Instituted eight-hour workday in 1912, free medical aid in 1915, a welfare department in 1917, leave with pay, workers provident fund in 1920 and Maternity Benefits for ladies in 1928 Stimulated entrepreneurship and economic development in the steel city to tackle unemployment

INCOME GENERATION FOR TRIBES


Increasing the agricultural productivity in the rural areas through assured irrigation Belief that tribes know best for themselves, has assisted in the formation of many Self-Help Groups (SHGs) Provides training, networking and assistance in marketing and vocational training in areas like computer operation, shorthand, typing, motor driving etc. TSRDS & TCS are both instrumental in providing sustainable livelihood Company covers over 800 villages under its social responsiveness initiatives

ENVIRONMENT
First company in the country to be conferred ISO14001 Certification Collieries and mines which support the Save Forests campaign Planted 1.5 million surviving trees as a part of the Green Millennium campaign Tata Steel was awarded the coveted The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) Award for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) 2002-03 the Climate Task Force (CCTF) also laid down a continued plan of investing in breakthrough technologies to reduce the carbon footprint by at least 20% in the next ten years

LOCAL EDUCATION
Promotes education of children and youth at various stages of their career development Coaches students for entrance into administrative, technical and the public services. Extending the Tata Business Excellence Model to create an Education Excellence Model. It has instituted the Dr. J. J. Irani Education Excellence Award to encourage all schools to serve children better. This includes a cash prize for the school.

It also assists the Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), a premier management institute in Jamshedpur. Jamshedpur School of Art Camp school-To help underprivileged girl children enter the mainstream of learning a camp school programme

TRIBAL EDUCATION
Launched educational programs to involve tribes in the economic development Bears the entire expense of two tribal students who secure admissions for management education at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Xavier Institute for Tribal Education (XITE) in an endeavour to assist less privileged tribal students improve their quality of life. Financial support worth Rs 25 lacs to more than 493 meritorious tribal students each year since 2004.

Balwadis for infants and toddlers. Project Sahyog-helps tribal students to develop self-esteem and plan their future. Fifty matriculate students identified every year for coaching that prepares them for higher studies

PRESERVATION OF TRIBAL CULTURE


Tribal Culture Centre (TCC)-showcases the tribal legacy of four major and five minor tribes of Jharkhand and Orissa Santhali Language Laboratory Revived the now almost forgotten 'Kati' - a game ADIM DASTOOR-3 day festival Lecture demonstration sessions on tribal heritage, exhibitions on historical advent of tribal movements, various forms of tribal dance and music and their relevance
