Effect Of Sand Content On Strength Of High Strength Concrete

Presented by Rashmiranjan Sahoo Ananda Kumar Jena Rajesh Kumar Nayak

Under the guidance of Dr. P.K Pani

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

This project deals with the analysis of properties of

high strength concrete mix with compressive strength of MPa and to study the influence of the percentage of sand on the 28 days compressive strength of 150*150 mm concrete cube. High performance concrete is usually produced using high quality materials.Due to versatility of concrete it can be possible to get concrete of various strengths by slightly varying the quality and quantity of its ingredients. This project work intends to investigate the optimum percentage of sand to be used in M50 concrete mix design to obtain the maximum strength. To see the variation strength with sand content variation.

INTRODUCTION
Concrete is the second largest material consumed by

human beings after food and water as per WHO. It is obtained by mixing cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water in required proportions.
The high strength concrete mix needs some special

attention. To achieve high strength, it is necessary to use lowest possible water-cement ratio which invariably affects the workability of the mix and necessitates the use of special vibration techniques and plasticizing materials for proper compaction.

WHAT IS HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE?

It is a type high performance concrete generally with a

specified compressive strength of 40 Mpa or greater. It requires high quality control and good quality of aggregates.

WHY do we need high strength concrete?

To put the concrete into service at much earlier age for

example opening the pavement. To build high rise buildings by reducing column sizes and increasing available space. To build the superstructure of long span bridges and to enhance the durability of bridge decks. To satisfy the specific needs of special application such as durability modulus of elasticity and flexural strength some of these application includes dams, grand stand roofs, marine foundations, parking garages and heavy duty industrial floors

Guidelines for the selection of materials

smaller maximum size of coarse aggregate. Using supplementary cementitious materials, such as

blast-furnace slag, fly ash and natural pozzolans.

Mix Design
Design of concrete mixes involves determination

of the proportions of the given constituents namely, cement, water, coarse aggregate and fine aggregate with admixtures if any. Workability is specified as the important property of concrete in the fresh state. For hardened state compressive strength and durability will be .considered

Factors to be considered in Mix design (as per SP23-1982)

Grade of concrete Type of cement Maximum nominal size of aggregate Minimum water cement ratio Workability
