This document provides instructions for a classroom activity modeling natural selection. Students will be divided into teams to simulate a hunt. Each team will have colored dots representing different populations and roles including wardens and hunters. The activity involves multiple timed hunts where hunters collect dots while the warden tracks time and remaining dots that reproduce. Students will record population data after each hunt to model how traits influence survival over generations.

Natural Selection
Count out 10 dots for each color on your
white paper
Record the colors of dots and that number
of starting population on your data sheet
Then spread out all the dots you counted
out on your fabric evenly
6. Now We hunt! HUNT #1
Warden – Keep track of time, allow
20 sec for hunting
All hunters
– Pick up dots 1 by 1
– Using only 1 hand for 20 sec
7. Record data
Each hunter
– Record the number of dots for each
color
– Share your data with your team
Warden
– collect the remaining dots on the fabric
– For EVERY remaining dot, add 3 more
(these are offspring)
8. HUNT #2
Repeat Hunt:
Warden – keeps time for 20 sec
Hunters – pick up dots 1 by 1 for
20 sec
9. HUNT #3
Repeat:
– Record data
– Add 3 dots for every remaining dot
on fabric
Repeat hunt:
– Warden keeps time for 20 sec
– Hunters – pick up dots 1 by 1 for 20
sec

– Record data
– Add 3 dots for every remaining dot
on fabric
