I have extensive experience in print journalism,
acquired in newsrooms over more than 30 years. I have
served as a reporter, photographer, editor and
publisher. I am especially adept at determining which
stories most affect readers and presenting them in a
way that engages interest and drives readership.
While serving as an editor I have refined my skills as a newsroom supervisor and
have a proven ability to mentor and inspire those who work with me. I am

Customer service/communication
In addition to journalism, my work-life has included a wide variety of jobs that
have honed my communication skills. I enjoy customer relations and I’m adept
at resolving complaints to everyone’s satisfaction.
Before going to work in journalism my experiences included working as an auto
mechanic, ship’s engineer on an 80-foot commercial fishing vessel off Cape Cod,
a roustabout for a high-wire show (the Winn Family Troupe, based in Trail,
Oregon), school bus driver, professional musician (guitar and banjo,
singer/songwriter), curator’s assistant at the Evansville (IN) Museum of Arts,
and estate caretaker (600 acre Edna St. Vincent Millay estate in Austerlitz, NY).
These wide-ranging experiences helped me develop a finely tuned ability to
effectively communicate with people from all walks of life.
Journalism Skills
News reporting and writing. I have a proven ability to research and write fair
and accurate news accounts and compelling feature stories. I understand
government budgets and the ability to find the stories behind the numbers. I
have strong interview skills and know the questions to ask and how to ensure
they are fully answered. I am a diligent researcher and make extensive use of
public records in my reporting.
Photography. I own a complete set of digital Nikon camera equipment and
understand how to tell the story with photos, tying the photos to the written
story.
Page design. Since the mid-1980s I have been involved in page layout, starting
with cut and paste (waxed paper columns on full size dummy sheets) and
evolving through Pagemaker, Quark and finally InDesign. I have also worked
closely and effectively with page designers.
Employment history
• June 2014 to May 2015, Helena (MT) Daily Record. I was employed here part
time as a reporter/photographer.
• March 2001 – Dec. 2007 and April 2009 to April 2014. White Mountain
Independent, Show Low, AZ. I was news editor for this twice-weekly paper. I
coordinated news coverage in two counties, supervised five reporters and a
photographer, edited news copy and paginated 13-15 pages for each edition,
wrote headlines, took photographs and still found time to write news and
opinion pieces. Under my leadership The Independent took second place in
General Excellence in the 2003 Arizona Newspaper Association Better
Newspapers Contest – a significant improvement over the five years prior to my
arrival. My efforts in covering the 468,000 acre Rodeo-Chediski Fire in 2002
earned the paper the “Distinguished Community Service Award”and first place
in the “Special Supplement” category in the Arizona Newspaper Association
Better Newspapers Contest category in 2003.
• Feb. 2000 – March 2001 – Blackfoot (ID) Morning News. I served as managing
editor for this six-day daily. I held full responsibility for the news content of this
paper. For much of my tenure with the Morning News there were no reporters
and I shouldered the responsibility for writing at least one local news story and
taking a front page photo for each issue. I successfully brought a “harder edge”
to the news for this paper as requested by publisher Don Black. I resigned shortly
after Black who left when the paper was sold.
• June 1996 – Feb. 1998 – The Mountain Mail, Salida, CO. I served as a news
reporter and photographer for this six-day daily.
• June 1996 – Feb. 2000 – Ghost writer. I wrote a financial advice book, “Love
and Money; You Can Have it All.” Also during this period I wrote freelance
articles for various regional publications.
• March 1994 – June 1996 – Neighborhood Publications (Hooksett Banner and
Rockingham County Edition of the Goffstown News), Hooksett, NH. I served as
editor of two of this company’s four weekly papers. I was hired by the new
owners of this company to revamp these papers. My duties included all aspects
of production of 20 to 30 pages each week – editing, photography, news writing,
headline writing, page design and mechanical paste-up. I supervised four full
time reporters and several correspondents.
• March 1991 – Feb. 1994. Publisher/Editor the Highland Journal, New London,
NH. I developed the business plan for this startup weekly paper and sold the
project to a group of investors. I served as publisher, editor, reporter,
photographer, circulation manager, etc.
•Nov. 1988 – March 1991 – Argus-Champion, Newport, NH. I served as the
paper’s New London reporter/photographer, covering all aspects of community
news: government, cops and courts and features. I wrote several research pieces
on local issues.
