Forensic entomology is the study of insect life cycles to estimate time of death. Insects are attracted to decomposing bodies and feed or lay eggs. By analyzing the type and stage of insect development, a forensic entomologist can estimate time of death. A body goes through stages of decomposition as insects feed and breed - fresh (insects arrive), bloated (maggots feed, body bloats), decay (skin cracks, strong odor as more insects arrive), and post-decay (mostly bones and hair remain as different beetles arrive). This process provides a timeline of insect colonization that can help determine how long death has occurred.

– bacteria inside body release gases during putrefaction,
– abdomen and then the whole body blows up like a
balloon,

– body fluids begin to seep from the body.
