There are different types of galaxies including spiral galaxies like the Milky Way, elliptical galaxies, and irregular galaxies. Spiral galaxies contain gas, dust, and new stars circling a central bulge, while elliptical galaxies are highly flattened and contain millions to trillions of stars. The Milky Way is estimated to contain between 200 billion and 400 billion stars within a diameter of 100,000 light years, classifying it as a spiral galaxy. Elliptical galaxies have ellipsoidal shapes and contain around 10 trillion solar masses of stars.
2. Fun Fact : About 25% of the universe consists of “dark matter” and about 70% of the universe consists of “dark energy”, which only leaves about 5% of the universe that is visible to us .
3. What are Galaxies? Consists of billions of stars Example: Our sun is the main star of the Milky Way. Interstellar medium (streams of protons moving from the stars) of gas and dust to form stars Example: The sun was created by an interstellar medium
4. True fact : Each Gala xy has 100 to 200 billion stars en circling its cente r ……. That is about how many stars that make up the sun
5. Types of Galaxies….. Spiral Galaxies - Made up of gas dust and new stars The Milky Way - Leading astronomers to think that we live in a spiral galaxy. Elliptical Galaxies - Highly flat in size and in size it ranges from millions to trillions of stars in its galaxy. Irregular Galaxies Very uncommon Once was either a spiral galaxy or a elliptical galaxy
6. True Fact: The average speed of a galaxy goes about 140 miles a second
7. Differences between the galaxies DIFFERENES BETWEEN: the Milky Way and elliptical galaxies The Milky Way should refer exclusively to the band of light that the galaxy that makes the night sky. It also includes between 200 billion and 400 billion stars. The diameter of the galaxy is 100,000 light years. The milky way is also known as a spiral galaxy. It is also in a local group which contains 3 large galaxies and 30 small galaxies, which includes the milky way. The elliptical galaxy is a galaxy has an ellipsoidal shape to it. The galaxy’s have close to 10 trillion solar masses that form into stars.
8. True Fact: A galaxy that is known as a “Small Galaxy” has less than a billion stars, but the other galaxies known as “Larger Galaxies” have more than a trillion stars
