There are different types of galaxies including spiral galaxies like the Milky Way, elliptical galaxies, and irregular galaxies. Spiral galaxies contain gas, dust, and new stars circling a central bulge, while elliptical galaxies are highly flattened and contain millions to trillions of stars. The Milky Way is estimated to contain between 200 billion and 400 billion stars within a diameter of 100,000 light years, classifying it as a spiral galaxy. Elliptical galaxies have ellipsoidal shapes and contain around 10 trillion solar masses of stars.

Differences between the galaxies DIFFERENES BETWEEN: the Milky Way and elliptical galaxies The Milky Way should refer exclusively to the band of light that the galaxy that makes the night sky. It also includes between 200 billion and 400 billion stars. The diameter of the galaxy is 100,000 light years. The milky way is also known as a spiral galaxy. It is also in a local group which contains 3 large galaxies and 30 small galaxies, which includes the milky way. The elliptical galaxy is a galaxy has an ellipsoidal shape to it. The galaxy’s have close to 10 trillion solar masses that form into stars.
True Fact: A galaxy that is known as a “Small Galaxy” has less than a billion stars, but the other galaxies known as “Larger Galaxies” have more than a trillion stars
