If you have:

Decided to launch an NFT community and just *know* that
community is super important (but not sure where to start)…

OR you have:

Launched an NFT community but are either experiencing:

.

This guide has been created by Community Coach, an
experienced community manager (Twitter: @acommunitycoach)
to help you navigate that process.

A GUIDE TO HIRING A NFT
COMMUNITY MANAGER
A dead community before you’ve even begun
TONS of messages from members but your team
struggles to keep up with it all
People in the community getting super
frustrated at the lack of support
Feel like your team has no strategy around how to
engage or create content for the community….
Chances are you’ve realised you need a
community manager.
COMMUNITY COACH
Cares passionately about your project or
business
Cares even MORE about the people in the
community and their needs
High on empathy
Ability to communicate well (over Discord, on
Twitter, preferably comfortable speaking in
Twitter spaces, Discord voice channels etc BUT
not essential)
MUST be a good listener
Multi-tasker: a community manager usually does
several things at once and thrives on that
Authentic: they must be able to have REAL
conversations with people and feel comfortable
with that
Tough edge: be able to deal with tough or toxic
situations (this can personally take a toll)

Now you know WHO you're looking for...
So how do you find them?

I N E E D A C O M M U N I T Y M A N A G E R
I N E E D A C O M M U N I T Y M A N A G E R
I'm going to give you FOUR options on how to find your
community manager.
You should note that none of these options have to be
"the" only option you can consider in the lifetime of your
community.
It may make sense to start with one option before
moving on to the next when it makes sense for your
project/ business/ situation.
This is tough, as your team may already be stretched
and community management is a full time role in itself.
But if you’re just getting started, there are teams out
there that have assigned community tasks across their
teams: maybe Brian mods from 3-5pm his time, Sarah
mods 5pm-7pm and so on. Sam does content strategy
one week and Pat is in charge of all announcements.
It’s definitely been done by smaller projects and it IS
possible, but it usually unravels when the team has to
focus on the many other parts of their job.

P E R S O N O R D O T H E
“ C O M M U N I T Y ” S T U F F .
This is similar to the first option, however you are hiring
from within your own personal network of family and/or
friends.
If you know someone that already has community
management experience, or is incredibly passionate
about your project then this could be a really great fit.
You could pay this person either through monetary
means or through free NFTs, tokens etc.
Note that many people underestimate the intensity and
level of work required to manage a community, so I
wouldn't recommend pushing someone to take on a
community manager role unless they truly understand
the requirements.

This was the default for web2 communities and I’m not
going to lie, my career has been built on finding roles
through these traditional means in the past!
You'll need budget for this option, but the good news is
you could find an experienced candidate who has
previous experience building community and could save
you precious time getting your community launched.

Option 4 is your best option if you have already
launched your community and you can identify members
who have suitable attributes to become your community
manager.
This is my HIGHLY RECOMMENDED option and I’ve
been suggesting this for years even in the web2
community space.
No-one knows your community better then the members
in your community.
They already know the conversations taking place, the
familiar names in your community, what matters most
and are most likely experts or at the very least incredibly
passionate about the topic that your community covers,
and this is EVERYTHING for a community manager.
The skills required to be a community manager CAN BE
TAUGHT but passion and the drive cannot be!

Refer to my checklist earlier on in this guide.
Look at your most engaged and active members in
your community.
That's already a good sign they are passionate about
your project or business.
Take note of how they converse in the group.
Are they friendly? Helpful? Giving positive vibes to the
group?
Pay attention to the way they are communicating with
other members.
You're looking for people who are able to build GOOD
relationships with other members in the group.
You can also consider creating an active callout to
the community to source your community manager.
Consider creating a new channel to accept applications,
or share a link to a google form for members to apply.
Be clear on what the tasks are that you need to be
completed. this will depend on the stage you are
currently in with your NFT project/community.
Also make sure you're clear on how you can compensate
your community manager for their time.

It's my firm belief that you can upskill anyone to learn
the fundamentals required to build community, but you
can't train the passion and drive that is needed to be a
great community manager.
In the web3 space, I actually think it can actually be a
positive if they don't have traditional community
management experience. It's best to find people who
think creatively without having a traditional mindset.
Need to train up your community manager?
