investigating a murder, when he found a calendar on the crime scene
bearing two faint brown smudges. Sir Henry had been working on a
classification system along with Hem Chandra Bose and Azizul Haque;

system on a wider scale. Sir Henry solved the case successfully,
published his works and in 1899 presented them to the British

Until the mid 19th century, European travel to India was complicated, with
travellers having to journey across a narrow isthmus after crossing the
Mediterranean Sea and then waiting at Aden to be collected by the next
steamer bound for India. To pass time, a lavish hostel was built at Aden.
However, this stopover was no longer necessary a little later and the hostel,
having fallen into disuse, fetched a whopping 9,300 rupees in the Europeans’
hands. This money was then used to set up an affluent place in India that is

1950, they first appeared in the city in 1958, when the local government
imported them from an Australian company.
The current ones were placed by the Public Works Department between

Babaji Palwankar Baloo(1876-1955) was an Indian politician, activist and
cricketer, best known for his left arm orthodox spin bowling. (vis.)
His first job was tending the pitch and sweeping the ground at a club for
Parsis in Poona, but a certain Mr Tross noticed him, and discovered his talent
for bowling. However, he never got around to improving his batting. He
played for the Hindus in the famous 1906 and 1907 matches against the
Europeans, which became a huge success.
He also went with an all-Indian team for a tour of England, and played in the
Bombay Quadrangular series as well. Baloo played 33 first class matches,
from 1905/06 to 1920/21, taking 179 wickets at an average of 15.21.
Inspite of all the experience, he was never let to captain the national team.

He was not given a chance to bat at the Club, and had to face
widespread protests against his inclusion in the team. Captaincy was
out of the question.
He went on to become a supporter of Gandhiji’s model of home rule,
and also contested against Ambedkar in elections in Bombay.

Raj Kumar Shukla was born in 1875 in Beetharva, in Mithila, and went on
to become a land cultivator. When he got hold of 5 bighas, he too started
cultivating the dominant crop in the region, under pressure.
Shukla used to write in a Hindi newspaper published by Ganesh Vidyarthi.
On the suggestion of Vidyarthi, Shukla and a few lawyer friends started
for the Lucknow session of 1916 of the Congress.
However, Lokmanya Tilak and MMM were not too enthusiastic about the
protests, but X promised him help in the following April.
The tipping point was officials burning down Shukla’s house, after which
X rushed to Y and the rest, as they say, is history.
