As we watch the film, “Dead Poets Society,” we will be focusing on the concept of being an individual in the face of conformity..
What are some themes we will see in the film? Struggling for identity Fighting conformity Finding a personal “voice”
First, some vocabulary… Individuality
Identity - Individualism Attributes Undaunted Charisma Unorthodox Zeal Romantic Realist Conformity
Definitions Attributes: a quality or characteristic of someone Undaunted: not discouraged or giving in to fear Zeal: Enthusiastic, devoted to a cause Conformity: Action or behavior along socially accepted standards Romantic: someone influenced richly imaginative ideals or ideas Realist: someone whose ideas are based on facts, not ideals or illusions Charisma: the power to inspire devotion and enthusiasm Unorthodox: different from traditional methods
Answer the following questions while watching the movie… What are the  attributes  of Mr. Keating? Which character is the most  undaunted  by the school? Which character has the most  charisma ? How is Mr. Keating’s teaching style  unorthodox ? Describe one character’s  zeal  for something? Explain how the students  conform  and don’t  conform  to the standards at the school. Which characters would you consider  romantics ? Which characters would you consider  realists ?
The completed questions – full sentences – will be due after we finish the movie.
In your answers, you must show that you know the meaning of the vocabulary words. There will also be a quiz Friday, March 14
