Rainforests are characterized by very high rainfall amounts between 68-78 inches per year. There are two main types of rainforests: tropical and temperate. Tropical rainforests are near the equator while temperate rainforests are located between the tropics and polar circles. Rainforests support high biodiversity and are estimated to contain 45-70% of the world's species, with many still undiscovered. They also play an important role in the Earth's oxygen turnover and carbon cycle. Rainforests have four layers - emergent, canopy, understory, and forest floor - each containing different adapted plants and animals. However, human activities like deforestation are shrinking rainforests and driving many
17. The Canopy Layer contains the majority of the large trees. The canopy is home to 50% of all plant species. 17
18. The fauna in this layer is similar to that in the emergent layer but more diverse. A 1/4 of all insect species are believed to exsist in the canopy.18
19. The Understory Layer or the shrub layer lies between the canopy and the forest floor. Only 5% of sunlight shining on the rainforest reaches the understory.19
20. The leaves in this level are much larger making a great home for insects. This layer is also home to birds, snakes, lizards, jaguars, boa constrictors and leopards to name a few. 20
21. The Forest Floor Layer is the bottom layer of the rainforest. There is little vegetation here because it receives only 2% sunlight.21
28. We affect the RainforestHuman induced deforestation plays a significant role in the future of the rainforest. Due to the heavy logging the rainforests are shrinking.28
29. This causes many species to be driven to extinction. Biologists estimate extinction is happening at a rate of 50,000/ year. 29
