3.4 FINDING AND
USING SLOPES
GEOMETRY
Mr. Saucedo
OBJECTIVE:
 We will find and compare slopes of lines.
QUESTION:
Which of these two rides have
a ste steeper slope?
How do you know?
Which of these has a
Negative slope?
Positive slope?
SLOPE
 DEFINITION:
 The ratio of a vertical change (rise) to horizontal
change (run) between any two points on the line.
 VISUAL
 FORMULA
GUIDED EXAMPLE
 FIND THE SLOPE OF THE LINE THAT
PASSES THROUGH THE POINTS (-3, 0)
AND (-2, 4).
CHECKPOINT
 FIND THE SLOPE OF THE LINE THAT
PASSES THROUGH THE POINTS (1, 2) AND
(-1, -4)

GUIDED PRACTICE
 Find the slope of the line.
BIG QUESTION:
If we choose different points on the line, will our
answer change?
CHECKPOINT
 Find the slope of the
Line.

PARALLEL LINES
HAVE
EQUAL
SLOPES!!!
CHECKPOINT
 If the red and blue
Lines are parallel, and
The red line has a
Slope of -4, then what’s
The slope of the blue line?

MORE ON SLOPES
 PERPENDICULAR LINES
Have
Negative
Reciprocal
Slopes
CHECKPOINT
 Line R and Line S are perpendicular. The
slope of line R is -3. What is the slope of line
S.

GUIDED QUESTION
 Find the slopes of
Each line. Which are
Parallel?
Guided Question
 Draw the line that goes through the point (3,-2)
with slope -1/6.
CHECKPOINT
 Tell whether the lines through the given points
are parallel, perpendicular or neither.
Line 1: (-3,1), (-7,-2)
Line 2: (2,-1), (8,4)
GUIDED QUESTION
