TV News How to write a studio intro
The Studio Intro The purpose of a studio introduction is to give a summary of the story. You cover the Who, What, When, Where and Why You leave the how and other info to the reporter in the field
Let’s look at an example Let’s choose something from Macbeth Prince Malcolm (Duncan’s son) scampered to England to gather an army to retake the throne So your studio intro about this may go something like …
Malcolm in England! Scottish Prince Malcolm arrived in England today to rally troops and support for his bid to retake the Scottish throne, usurped by Macbeth after the murder of King Duncan last week. In a move to anger some lords, the English have agreed to support Prince Malcolm in his fight and King Duffy pledged ten thousand men to the cause.
Break it down, homie! Who: Prince Malcolm What: Arrived in England When: Today Where: England – London I’d assume Why: To rally troops to retake Scot throne How: An English Army of 10,000 men
It’s that simple Don’t forget the studio simply introduces the story – this is TV not print – we only watch the magic box because of the pretty pictures it brings us.
What else? At the end of the intro you will ‘throw’ to the field – either for a pre-recorded segment or ‘live’ PTC (piece to camera) Let’s look at some classic ‘throws’
Throws Pre-recorded: Star’s Jillian Hedgehog has the story. ATV’s Robert Bottomsniff was at the scene. Pearl’s Maggie Penguinguts brings us this story. Live: Let’s go now to William Hockalugie at the scene. William, what can you tell us about the …? We cross now, live, to Pearl’s Anita Blabber for the latest. Anita, 10,000 men is quite a commitment, how soon will the army decamp?
Next We’ll look at how to answer those questions next.
