  Knowledge and Attitude among the Nursing Students Studying in BPKIHS Regarding
                                    HIV/AIDS

Background: HIV/AIDS, a social disease took pandemic form within a short span of time
affecting 40 million people through the globe. Adults of the developing countries are the main
victims of the contributing to 95% of the total world’s HIV infection and 90% death.


Objectives: The objective of the study was to find out the knowledge and altitude among the
nursing students studying in BPKIHS regarding HIV /AIDS.

Methods and Materials: This is baseline cross-sectional, questionnaire based study conducted
among the female students of both B. SC. Nursing and Certificate nursing First year and last year.
Use pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire data was collected from the selected students after
obtaining informed verbal consent. The data was collected on the month of November, 2007.

Results: Most of the students are teenagers. Most of the students had satisfactory knowledge
about causative agent, risk groups and modes of transmission and prevention. Only 20% students
had knowledge about confirmation of HIV diagnostic test, 19% reported HIV virus is found in
saliva, 36.7% had knowledge about PEP and more than half of the nurses do not know about
ART services available at BPKIHS.

Conclusions: Based on the study we conclude that HIV/AIDS awareness programme among the
students’ nurses as well as other health care workers is mandatory, however education campaigns
should be carefully structured and specifically tailored to particular setting.
