Leadership
Definition
The process of modeling personal values while
influencing and energizing people to embrace
change, by providing...
 purpose
 vision
 direction
 motivation
while operating to accomplish the mission (Goals)
and improving the organization.
LeadershipTraining Leadership Excellence Course
What I learned:
 To be an effective leader I must reflect my most important core values in
my daily leadership behaviors and “lead by example”
 Outcome: developed and refined my “Personal Leadership Philosophy” to use as a tool to
build trust and drive personal accountability
 That everyone is “hardwired” differently and that a person’s “leadership
style” is often different under stress. How to leverage my personal
Energize2LeadTM Profile (E2L), along with my team’s E2L graph to:
 Build trust and credibility
 Improve individual and team communications
 Improve team dynamics
 Improve coaching and motivation
 Better assess team member fit to tasks and jobs
LeadershipTraining Energize2Lead Profile
Energize2Lead reveals a person’s leadership personality traits in 3-dimensions. It
provides unique insight, diagnostics, and strategies regarding interpersonal
communications, motivation, conflict management, team building, and coaching.
LeadershipTraining Leadership Excellence Course
What I learned (continued):
 Goals:
 Collaborative goal setting is a key motivation tool
 Goals must be SMART, aligned both up and down the organization, measurable, tracked,
and communicated!
 Goal setting best practices
 Communication / Feedback:
 Leaders cannot succeed without effective communication
 Communication is a process that often fails due to many sources of distortion, overload, and
incomplete feedback
 Communication best practices including knowing your people, E2L – how and what to
communicate based on how a person is “hardwired,” using the brief back technique to
ensure that the “intent” is truly understood by the receiver, practicing Active Listening, and
the importance of soliciting and giving more frequent feedback.
 Platinum Rule: Communicate with others, as they want to be communicated with!
LeadershipTraining Leadership Excellence Course
What I learned (continued):
 Motivation:
 Motivation comes from within and it’s the Leader’s job to create the proper climate to foster
motivation
 Several key theories of motivation were explained and discussion of how to use them in
practice
 Motivation best practices including cross-generational motivation and how to leverage E2L
to enhance motivation leadership
 Conflict:
 Conflict is a leadership opportunity and effective leader’s leverage conflict to change
the organization and drive innovation
 There are 5 common conflict resolution strategies (Accommodate, Compete, Avoid,
Compromise, Collaboration); each one can be appropriate – depending on the situation
LeadershipTraining Leadership Excellence Course
What I learned (continued):
 Setting Leadership Priorities:
 Many people can gain 2 hours or more back a day through effective time management
 Effective leaders identify and focus on their High Payoff Activities (HPAs)
 A Leader’s time management can have a significant impact on organizational productivity
 Priority setting and time management best practices
 Accountability:
 High performing teams use After Action Reviews to improve performance and hold each
other accountable
 Holding people accountable requires trust, regular conflict & debate, and full commitment by
all team members
 Coaching:
 Coaching is one of the most important roles that a Leader performs and a “high payoff
activity”
 Coaching best practices including performance coaching, mentoring, and how to leverage
E2L to enhance coaching performance
LeadershipTraining Sample Comments: End of Course
