The document outlines a plan for a music video that will tell a narrative story through a mixture of emotions. It will start dark as a man has trouble sleeping, then transition to a dream state showing a coastal town where the man's relationship ends sadly. There will be a strong relationship between the lyrics and visuals. Camera work, lighting, editing and mise-en-scene details are provided to set the mood for each section. The target audience is young adults aged 18-26, and the video aims to engage them through relatable actors, maintaining a medium pace, and incorporating popular visual styles.
2. Here is a copy of my bubbl.us mind map, setting out the basic ideas
form my music video. This is on my blog, if you wish to have a
better look. My music video plan is for it to be a mixture of
emotions for the audience, and not to have one set tone through
out. It will have a dark start, mixture of fun, romantic elements and
unfortunately a sad end.
3. Start of Music Video;
Night time;
00.00 - First shot is a mid shot showing the majority of the male character. During the
instrumental intro the camera will zoom in to a close up of the characters face for the next
shot -visual link to the lyrics.
00.17-00.22 - Male character, who has trouble sleeping. Is trying to force sleep by
taking tablets. “Now dissolve me, two tabs on your tongue”
00.26-00.30 - cut to character in bed counting sheep, sheep will be shot using stop
animation. “a herd of shepherds to herd their sheep, sleep now my only one”
00.34-00.40 – male character unable to sleep leans over to bedside table and looks at
picture frame. Picture frame will have an image of the his ex (undecided if this will be
green screen). “Broken sweethearts who sleep apart”
00.??-00.??- He then puts on a cd/mp3 of Ocean Noises by Alt-J “She makes the sound,
the sound the sea make to calm me down.”.
4. Dream State 01.09-03.25;
Coastal village/town setting
Couple visiting, we see them walking on the beach, through the town. I like the idea of them Bycling.
Highlighting a ring.
01.57-02.04 – Woman breaks up with man, kindly. We see the girl give back a ring?? “and pulse to
pulse, now shush”
02.05-02.25 – We see the couple talk, the man try to persuade the woman not to. “She makes the
sound , the sound the sea makes me to calm me down. She makes the sound, the sound the sea
makes, I am tired now”
02.33-03.07 – We then see the couple go from talking to arguing, as obviously male character doesn’t
want to be dumped. “Ohhs”
03.08-0325 - woman character walks of down the beach, leaving male character wondering WHY?!.
“she makes the sound the sea makes, knee-deep in the north sea” x3
03.25-03.51 – layer the waves in with the male character sleeping to link the two events. “she makes
the sound the sea makes, knee-deep in the north sea” x5
03.52 – Male character wakes! “SEEEAA”
5. Camera Work;
For the bedroom scenes I intend to use stop motion animation in
places to give a sporadic tired feel. Mostly at a eye-level angle,
though if character is in bed a high or birds eye angle may be
used. Generally close up shots used in this scene, though the
starting shot is a mid shot the camera will zoom in to the close
up.
The dream state scenes there will be more use of camera
movement, with zooms, pans and tracking being used. Again
the most frequently used angle will be eye-level, though other
angles may be used such as the canted to give a edgy feel. A
range of Mid – long shots, mid shots, close ups and extreme
close ups to be used to highlight/show particular settings,
features or elements.
6. Lighting
Limited lighting in the bedroom, maybe from
one back light. This is to represent his
emotions.
Natural lighting in the coastal setting, to
begin with it stimulates the idea of how
natural and happy the couple are together.
However this will be edited later on.
7. Editing;
Bedroom -
Colour alteration
Quick paced change between shots.
Layering used to fade into dream state?
Dream State –
Colour alteration, to firstly give a warm, indie,
Instagram feel. Then it changes as the couple
split in a more cold, sad impression.
The pace will be quick and slow, with even the
attempt of sloooww-mmoootiiooon!
8. Mise En Scene;
The Bedroom –
Minimalist, so we focus on the character, the key props and his
actions.
Props – Sheep made from card, CD case Ocean Noises by Alt-J,
tables and a drink? (not real drugs though)
Costume – PJ shorts and a tee
Dream state –
A coast village/town. Must have quaint buildings, to give a
traditional seaside look. An open beach, though it doesn’t have
to be sandy. Finally beach huts. This scenery will show the
beauty the was is/was.
Props – Bikes. Camera, they can be filming each other or taking
pictures.
Costume – TBD
9. My music video idea applies to a couple of
the music conventions. Firstly it complies
with two of Goodwin’s theory as there is;
a strong relationship between visual
and lyrics and a relation ship between
music and visual with cutting to the beat.
10. My music video plan would is mainly
narrative based, with the storyline of a
couples separation and a mans grief over
this happening.
Yet the video does have some concept
features, this is probably more thematic then
symbolic. Key themes in the video are;
Forced sleep, the coast, and the conflict – in
particular between the couple.
11. My target audience of young adults, 18-26yrs. This genre of music has
been described as Folk-step, I think that’s a brilliant way of describing
this music. A new genre like that attract young people as it’s something
new, and knowing of an act (or genre) first is always cool in music.
To engage with this audience further I will use actors around the same
age, making the video more relatable.
Another way I will attract my target audience is by the pace of the
music video, having it at a medium pace with quick paced and slow
paced scenes I intent on telling a story yet still holding the attention of
the audience.
Lastly I will attract the target audience with the visual style of the music
video. Everything cool these days has an Instagram effect and my
video will include in to!
