AMY
WINEHOUSE
LIONESS:
HIDDEN
TREASURES
I created my own album cover, based on the influence
of an album cover from Amy Winehouse. I feel it is
important that I channel my efforts into this sort of
activity as it gives me an actual idea of what kind of
things are manageable and realistically feasible to do,
when I come to producing my real album cover for my
artist. I used my sister to act as a model for me, and
used make-up to replicate the iconic eyeliner and wild
hairstyle’s demonstrated by Amy Winehouse, as a way
of establishing the genre of the album cover. I found
this enjoyable to do, however it proved difficult when
replicating an existing album cover, as due to a lack of
both financial backing and time, I struggled to find exact
replacers of the props and accessories modelled by Amy
herself on this particular album cover. I used a free
online editing service, ‘ipiccy’ to edit and alter the
image I took with my digital camera, I found this service
easy to use, however some of the effects were quite
simplistic and thus I struggled to achieve the overall
high quality I was untimely aiming for. This helps me to
establish the kind of standards of platform I want, when
producing my actual album cover, as I want that to be of
the best quality possible, thus attracting my target
audience. I will make visual comparisons between the
actual album cover and my replicated version, and thus
seek audience feedback as a means of gaining further
input and advice of which I hope will help me to make
improvements when coming to produce my own album
cover, nearing the end of my project.
VISUAL COMPARISON BETWEEN THE REAL AND MY REPLICATION:
In my own version of the album cover, I
mirrored the bold black, capital typography. I
feel this typography was conformed to the
rustic genre of Amy Winehouse’s music.
My model replicated the stance shown in Amy’s actual album cover. Furthermore the mise-en-cence shown, such as the hair code and
make-up code replicate that shown of Amy. However some of the features differ for example, the head piece shown, and the tattoos and
costume code, this is because I found it tricky to try and conform to all the features with limited resources available, and thus is something
to think about when creating my actual album cover.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK:
I asked members of my family, friends and peers at school and colleagues at work to compare my replica of Amy Winehouse's album cover with the original, In the attempt to
gain useful feedback of which I can apply to my actual album cover when I come to produce it at a later date in my project. By asking a range of people, from different settings,
and of different ages, I feel I will have a broad understanding of public desires and thus hopefully I will be able to establish my specific target audience from the feedback I have
gathered.
Julianna- “ I really like your recreation of Amy Winehouse’s album cover!. The make-up is really similar to hers which makes it look really realistic and believable. I like the editing you
have done too, however it is a little different to the actual album cover which if you are replicating an album cover could mean that is appears a bit different and then isn't as good. The
text you used is really similar too!!.
Jermaine- “I actually prefer your version of the Amy album cover to be honest! The make-up is really similar to Amy Winehouse’s usual make-up which makes it very easy for onlookers
to know who the artist is! I also like the fact that the positioning and like how her body is positioned is the same, because you can draw links between the two very easily.
Winnie- “This album cover is really nice! I really like the fact that you put your own spin on it and added your own effects and interpretations. I think the editing may be a bit too
yellowish, and kind of muffled which I think is not really in tune with the genre and could contradict other elements of the album cover. I think its really cool that the hairstyle is really
similar, and also the make-up conforms to Amy Winehouse’s statement makeup.”
Rebecca- “ I really like this album cover as I feel it really conforms to the typical stereotype of Amy Winehouse. I think a few of the elements could have been better matched though, as
I think the hair ribbon is too different and is on the wrong side, however if it was not a replica then I think it is really good the way you did it!
Jana- “ This is a really good replication of Amy Winehouse’s album cover, as a lot of statement things that are associated with Amy are actually met, for example her big flicks with her
eyeliner and out there hairstyle, so its really easy to infer what it is! I think it would look more similar and accurate if your model was more into the frame, because in the real album
cover, she takes up more of the frame, and the shot is closer up than shown in your album cover”
Daniel- “this album cover is really nice! I like the editing used, however I think that it’s a bit differently from the editing techniques used in the actual album cover, but to be honest I
prefer yours! I think that the text used on the album cover, could have been a bit bolder as I feel it is quite insignificant in the shot, and in comparison to the actual album cover, her
text is more noticeable and bolder, which would more likely attract an audience to buy the album than yours would! Overall though I really like this album cover!!”
