Artwork Analysis
1. “Art is everywhere you look for it” - El Greco
2. a) This artwork matches the art definition chosen if we focus on today´s reality. The
artwork shows a field covered by millions of tires, where a lifesaver is the only thing
that stands out if we look carefully. This image at first sight looks really simple and if
you do not reflect on its meaning it may look meaningless and boring. This artwork,
as the definition says, explains how art is everywhere, even in a place full of tires,
where people never reflect on or think further about it when we see them, and where
only by stopping a second to observe we are able to distinguish a lifesaver. However,
the artwork is much more complex, and has a deep meaning about our world´s
reality. The artwork metaphorically presents the failure of human´s intervention on
earth today. The artwork deals with the problem of disused objects, and its
contamination, and humans inability to deal with this problem. This reality can be
seen all around the world, everywhere you look for it, just as the definition of art by El
Greco says.

3. a) The artwork I chose is a painting. Pejac uses a lot of details to create this artwork.
Starting from above, the first two thirds of the painting were tackled with great cautious, as
the artist used a lot of details, making each bottle distinguish as an individual object. The
artist used small brushes, and oleo or acrylic techniques. In the missing third, Pejac focused
on the effect of continuity, instead of giving details to his artwork. This can be seen, as
individual objects cannot be distinguished anymore.
b) In the artwork two kids in a boat are represented, sailing and fishing in a sea full of plastic,
trying to look for something to eat. This whole image, represents today´s reality in many
parts of the world, where poverty, hunger and contamination are the main problems we have
to deal with. This painting is hyper-realistic, not only proportions are real, but colours, figures
and the image as a whole are also realistic factors. The kids in the boat were painted with
their skin colour, their hair was also painted with a brownish colour, and their knees and
elbows are bent, which makes the figures extremely realistic. Both kids are skinny, which I
can assume it is sign of their hunger. They have no t-shirt on, which may make reference to
their reality, living in poverty. The artwork shows very little water, instead, it shows, millions
of bottles floating, which covers the sea. The technique used at the top third of the artwork,
gives the sensation of continuity. The two thirds missing, were painted with much more
details and each bottle can be distinguished as a unit.
c) i: The artwork is represented by specific elements. In the painting, the elements that can
be distinguished are water, bottles and a boat with 2 kids inside. The boat, with the kids
occupy less than a tenth of the painting. Horizontally, the boat is located in the middle, and
vertically, it is located on the right side of the artwork if we look at it from the front. The water,
also occupies a very small part of the composition, and it is located in the middle of it. The
element that predominates in size are the bottles, which occupy most of the drawing, giving
focus to the fact of an ocean completely covered by plastics.
ii: In this artwork, the colour palette is polychromatic, as many colours can be appreciated.
Each colour defines each object, this means that each element is defined with one colour, by
the real colour of each element. For example water, which is painted in light blue, as water
itself is. Cool and desaturated colours predominate in this artwork. However, some warm
colors can be appreciated, as the boat and the kids.
d) When I look at the artwork, I first look at the boat with the kids. This happens as it is the
element which distinguishes the most in the artwork. This happens as the colors used to
paint it were different to the rest of the artwork. While the ocean full of bottles is what
occupies most of the piece of art, the boat with the kids inside are the figures that contrast
with the rest. This makes me look at the boat first. Moreover, while the ocean is shown flat,
the dismension effect created by Pejac in the boys and the boat, makes it the first thing to
look at. Then, the second element I look at is the visible water surface, as its almost plain
colour also contrasts with the rest. And finally, I appreciate the image as a whole, staring at
the bottles.
e) The artwork makes me reflect, and makes me feel really lucky for everything I have. The
artist, Pejac, is able to express a sad reality, making people who appreciate his painting
reflect beyond the artwork itself, and going deeper into today's world. I believe that the visual
resources triggering these feelings are the kids, painted with no t-shirts, craving for food, in a
sea or ocean full of contamination, which is what happen in many places nowadays.
f) I believe that the message or meaning of this artwork is to make people aware of today's
reality in many countries. Contamination and poverty are real problems, and many people
are not aware of this. I think that the artwork is expressing this idea, and the tragic reality of
our world, in contrast of many other people, in contrast with most of the people who are able
to appreciate the artwork. The topic Pejac tackled with is today's hunger and contamination,
symbolised by the two kids in a boat searching for food in a sea where the only thing that
can be find are plastic bottles, as a consequence of humans intervention. Humans are
responsible for the reality depicted in the painting, and many are not even aware of it.
4) I believe that a song which can represent this artwork is "Imagine", by John Lennon, which
was released in 1971. This song's lyrics encourage the listeners to imagine a world at peace
without the barriers of borders or the divisions of religion, race and nationality and to
consider the possibility that the whole of humanity would live unattached to material
possessions and without hunger and poverty. This last message of the song, in which an
utopian world without hunger and poverty, and without being attached to possessions is
presented, is similar to the artwork. The artwork represents the suffering of poverty,
something present in today's world, and Pejac is able to make people aware of this reality. In
Lennon's song, this same idea also invites us to reflect, imagining a world in which poverty
and hunger are not present, where we are all the same, sharing the world together, which is
also an idea which came to my mind while reflecting about the artwork.
"Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world"
