URDAIBAI UNESCO
BIOSPHERE RESERVE
Andrea Luengo, Eneko Larrea and Irati Oiarzabal
What is?
Urdaibai is a marsh created by the Oka River. It is the
most important coastal environment in the
Busturialdea region of Biscay. It is an environment
that is highly variable with the sea up and down.
Due to its size and conservation, it is the most
important wetland in the Basque Country, providing
protection for many birds during the migration period.
Protected area
It is a controlled land or water area, with well-known examples of nature park and
nature reserve. The levels of protection vary greatly depending on the location,
allowing in some extreme cases access to very few people, and at the other
extreme, natural areas along with people's residences, including resource
exploitation.

Doñana
Doñana is a protected nature reserve in southern Spain, located in the
autonomous community of Andalusia. It has a total area of 108,086 hectares:
54,251 hectares of Doñana National Park, created in 1969, plus the creation of
1989 and 53,835 hectares of Doñana Natural Park, enlarged in 1997. The most
popular protected species in Doña is the Iberian catacomb.
Proclamation
Urdaibai was proclaimed in 1984 by UNESCO as a nature reserve.
Because it is a wetland, it is a unique place for migratory birds. The Mediterranean
and Atlantic Europe have a great natural wealth of over 3,000 plant species and
almost 400 vertebrate animals. And all this is due to the great abundance of its
ecosystem: forests, rivers, estuaries, coasts, grasslands, rocky areas, cliffs ...
As part of preserving all of this natural heritage, a large area of the Basque
Country is part of the Natura 2000 network of the world's largest protected natural
species.
