Barriers to communication
Communication is a multidimensional
interactive process of sharing common
sets of signs, symbols and language
from one person to another so that a
suitable response results.
It is a dynamic and continuous process
that involves many people.
Barriers of communication are the hindrances or
the difficulties involved in the process of
communication which distort the message being
properly understood by the receiver.
Barriers prevent the communication from being
effective.

 PSYCOLOGICAL BARRIERS
 LANGUAGE BARRIERS
 INTERPERSONAL BARRIERS

 Semantic barriers are concerned with
problem and obstruction in the process of
encoding and decoding the message in to
words or other impression.
 The use of different language, different
interpretation of different words and
symbols ,poor vocabulary and poor
grammatical knowledge are some of the
semantic barriers.
Any disturbance or interference that reduces
the clarity and effectiveness of communication
is called noise.
It may be physical or psychological ,written or
visual.
Noise distracts the persons communicating and
acts as barrier to communication.

4. Inadequate or overload information.
 Organizational barriers occurs in the
organization due to rules ,regulation and
hierarchical relationship.

2. Hierarchical relationship
3. Non conducting of staff
meetings
4. Wrong choice of channel
Psychological barriers arises from motives,
emotions, social values ,different perception
etc. These create psychological distance ,
causes misunderstanding among people at work
and hinder the communication process.

2. Premature evaluation
3. Poor listening
4. Attitude of superiors
5. emotions
Different languages, vocabulary, accents, dialects
represent national/ regional barriers.
Semantic gaps are words having similar pronunciation
but multiple meanings.
Badly expressed message, wrong interpretation and
unqualified assumptions.
The use of difficult or inappropriate words/ poorly
explained or misunderstood messages can result in
confusion.
Lack of Trust
Lack of Knowledge of non-
verbal communication
Wish to capture authority
Fear of losing power of
control
Lack of Motivation
Lack of co-operation, fear of
penalty and poor relationship
Interrupting the speaker.
Not maintaining eye contact with the
speaker.
Rushing the speaker to complete what
he/she has to say.
Making the speaker feel as though
he/she is wasting the listener's time.
Being distracted by something that is
not part of the on-going
communication.
Asking too many questions.
Unclear messages.
Lack of consistency in the
communication process.
Incomplete sentences.
Not understanding the receiver.
Not seeking clarifications while
communicating.
