8 FUN FACTS ABOUT
COCONUTS
1. Monkeys are trained to harvest coconuts.
• Since coconut farmers don’t want to risk their lives by cimbing
coconut trees, they train monkeys to do it for them instead. Some
farmers control the monkeys with a long leash, while other farmers
can simply use their voice to keep them in line.
2. Coconuts are used for artistic purposes.
• Coconuts have been used as a medium for sculptures that are both
intricate and simple. The unique look and feel of coconut art makes
it a lovely, cultural addition to any home. Coconut shells, with their
interesting texture, also make a great canvas for festive paintings.
3. Portuguese sailors helped name the coconut.
• During the 16th century, Portuguese sailers thought the three holes
in coconut shells looked like the human face. Thus, they thought of
the name coco meaning “grinning face, grin, or grimace.” When the
coconut was introduced to England, the suffix “nut” was added,
and that’s how the name came to be.
4. Coconuts have many health benefits.
• Coconut meat (the white, fleshy part)
not only has a high fiber content, which
makes you feel full longer and helps
with digestion, but it also offers high
levels of manganese, potassium, and
phosphorous.
• Coconut meat is also comprised of
natural fats and oils that are actually
quite healthy. They contain medium-
chain fatty acids that help enhance
immunity.
5. Coconut water can be substituted for blood
plasma.
• Since cococut water contains good
levels of susgar, dietary fiber,
proteins, antioxidants, vitamins,
and minerals, it can be used as a
short-term substitute for human
blood plasma.
• In fact, there’s been one
documented case of a cocnut IV
being used to treat an extremely
dehydrated patient in the Solomon
Islands.
6. Practically every part of the coconut has a use.
• The rough exterior shell of the coconut can be used to make ropes,
mats, brushes, and sacks. Dried coconut meat can be used to
produce coconut oil, which is used for cooking and cosmetic
purposes. Coconut leaves can be used to make baskets, brooms,
and roofing materials. The possibilities are endless.
7. A coconut is a drupe, not a nut.
• Even though the word “nut” is in coconut, coconuts are technically
not nuts. They are actually drupes, which are fleshy fruits with thin
skin and a central stone containing the seed. Peaches, plums, and
cherries are other examples of drupes.
8. Flower buds from the coconut palm tree also
serve a purpose.
• By picking the flower buds from coconut
trees and cutting them in a strategic way,
coconut farmers have been able to extract
the sap from the bud and use it to make
coconut palm sugar.
• This sugar is made by heating the sap in
order to evaporate water and thicken it iup.
Once it’s been through the heating process,
it is then crystalized and turned into sugar.
• Coconut palm sugar is becoming increasingly
popular because it has a low glycemic index,
which means it won’t spike your blood sugar.
